Default Knotless leader joint SBS...

A couple have people have asked me for a SBS on this knotless leader joint

Tools :
  • Needle (must have eye big enough to take the point end your tapered leader).
  • Tapered Leader.
  • Scissors or line snips.
  • Small emery board or piece glass paper.
  • Some thing to grip needle such as pliers, forceps, a pin-vise or a bit of wooden dowel.
  • Superglue.
  • Optional Hi-Vis sleeve.

First carefully work needle 1.5 - 2 cm in to the tip of the fly line, starting at the end and working back up the fly line(towards reel).

Then thread the needle with the point end of the tapered leader.
Pull leader through the fly line until about 3 to 4 cm of the butt end of the leader remains.

Use the emery board/ glass paper to roughen up the butt end of leader and very sparsely apply some superglue.

Pull butt end of the leader most of the way through, the superglue usually grips before the last bit of the butt end is pulled inside the tip of the fly line.
Trim off remnants of the butt end as tight up to the fly line as possible.

If you want to add an extra helper for nymph fishing use some of this Hi-Vis pole float sleeve.

Just thread a piece up the leader, like so, it helps float the tip of the line and spot takes when fishing sub-surface.

It is very flexible and can be stretched over nail/needle knots too.

Now cast away and enjoy a very delicate turn over, excellent on very light lines.

Once the tapered leader has been trimmed down beyond use just tie in a new one with a two turn water knot.

Very neat and tidy, but it would worry me a bit.
Not sure I could live with it, as the fear of it pulling through would be constantly on my mind.
Thanks for showing us the SBS Frank.

Yeah.It would worry me as well and there is no guarantee that doing the same to different lines would get you the same result and if it pulls out it's a bit late to find out as a big fish heads for the hills with leader and flies.

Had a session at Broad Oak Trout lakes, Malvern this morning and thoroughly tested your Knotless nail knot by taking the fisheries record rainbow of 10 lbs.

The above is a quote from one of the PMs asking me to do this SBS.

Try it, experiment a little, your confidence may grow with experience.

You can use a sewing machine needle but I have found an ordinary needle is less likely to come out the side of the fly line to early due to its blunter profile.
