Default furled leaders vs tapered question

Done abit of looking into these, just a few questions, which do you guys use most of? Do you use more of one over the other and if so does this depend on the type of fishing your doing, ie dries/wets? I fish mainly stillwaters and ressies and I think these will help my presentation 10 fold. Last question, which ones/makes are the best?! Any links, advice etc much appreciated. Welshy

Hi Welshy,
You should PM mrtrout as he has had some experience at using furled leaders. I would have thought a tapered leader would be better for stillwaters.

Hi Welshy, I am fairly new to furled leaders, and the jury is still out.
I bought my first one from rod3, a member on here.
He makes very nice ones and they are also sold by Phil, at spiderplus, also a trade member on here.
I like them in many respects, but feel that in a lot of my fishing which is mainly rivers, and spooky trout, they don't present a fly as delicately as a normal tapered leader.
By that I mean the furled leader is an extension of your fly line and is quite visible, and I was advised to use no more than 5ft of tippet material in order to produce a good turnover.
With a normal tapered leader, I would be using approx 12ft, and in the right material that 12ft would be less visible.
flyfishwithme, is very pedantic about his tapered leaders and has his own recipe for making them.
I fish with him on a regular basis, and his turnover and presentation of the fly is superb.
I feel his method is the way to go, and I will be experimenting with both this season, before I lay down anything in stone.
I am currently making my own furled leaders and trying to improve with each one the thickness and taper etc.
Hope that is of some help.
For £5 which is what rod3 charges for his silk type ones, I would invest in one and try it out. Good luck. Steven.

Like a broken record i will chime in again to sing the praises of the singapore leader, since discovering these a couple of years ago i have never used anything else... they are cheap easy to make (much easier than a furled leader)
turn over fantastically and so easy to customise the construction, i have settled on a 60/20/20 construction which works well for me

Because I am in lazy mode today Icky, do you have a link? I remember reading something about these from you before.
They sound interesting, and if they work for you on the clear chalkstreams you fish, they should be OK for me.
Never worry about chiming in, that's what this forum is for.

Thanks so far for the quick responce, to add to what we have already, if I was to make my own tapered leaders, wouldn't this entail lots of knots down the leader? This is me guessing you make them from say flurocarbon of differing breaking strains via loop to loop connections?

Thanks again!
Keep um coming guys.

the easiest way I have been shown (by flyfishwithme phil) is to blood knot all of your sections together. its easier than you think, they are great leaders Im defo thinking about selling my furled leaders.

brilliant! some more questions, if fishing a furled leader, i understand you add tippet material, so with tapered leaders, i understand a 3x would best turn over a size 12 fly....? do i need to add a tippet to the end of the tapered leader or is this just a preference thing? If you do, does it tend to be long?
