The Water Knot is what you require. You don't actually attach a dropper; you form one by knotting two lengths of line together.

You will find an example here

Most use three turns. John uses two. I use four.

Far & away the best and simplest method is to use a straight through piece of leader material of your chosen length and then cut off a short piece from the spool. Lay it alongside the leader at the point where you want your dropper to be and do a three turn water knot. Use the downward facing length as your dropper. When it is all tightened up nicely attached your flies and away you go. Quick and simple and effective.

I use the blood loop, then cut the lower end, simple but effective

Hi,
I use a blood knot, I find it stronger then a 3 turn water knot, also you dont get the little tags that you sometimes get using a water knot

I think making a very small loop and tying on a seperate piece of nylon with a blood knot is the strongest.

There was an article in one of the monthly mags a few years ago that compared knot strengths in lab conditions. The Water Knots proved a lot stronger than the Blood knots. This was especially true when the Water knots were tied with an even number of turns (don't ask me why, I can't remember).

The main downside that I find with Water knots is that when using Fluorocarbon, there is a problem that can occur. The knot is fine in a straight line, but if you have more than one fly on when you hook a fish and that extra fly hooks something, the knot pulls apart a lot more easily when the stress on it is not in a straight line, but applied in the same way you would apply force to split a chicken wish bone.
