Default Problems landing line straight on the water

Ive now had my 4th or 45th time fly fishing and im getting not to bad at casting and getting decent distance. Nice loops most of the time aswell but when i present my fly it seems that the line straightens out and when it falls to the water it lands with lots of s bends in it.

Its been failry windy every time i fish, though watching my friends fish when they fals fast there line straightens out complelty in the air and even if they start the back/forward cast a little late there lines generaly stay straight yet mine has a tendancy to nounce if my timing is off.

Not sure of the brand of line im using, could be quite old. its very light and is a pinkish colour. Its a floating line and after getting used to its lightinise i can cast a fair distance even in the iwnd

Hi fishingbee
Try your mates rod /line and see if it still lands in 's' shapes ......if so then the problem is yours....the fly line will only 'track' the path that the rod tip goes.

This is a technique that you may find useful in a more advanced stage as you can build in 'kicks' in the line to avoid obstacles or current shifts.(don't worry about that now....you need to cure your fault first)....answer ...get casting lessons

The other option is that it is the line that has developed a memory of the coiled position whilst on the reel.....and this is the option relating to if when using your mates rod it lands straight.....answer... get a new line

I did use my mates rod and had a great tie with it, but i was tired and worn out and cant really remember how it was landing on the water.

I have problems with my slack line getting tangled up when it laying on the ground, i had to untangle it regularly and it also managed to knott a few times when shooting line. it has a tendancy to coil up when you reel out line for casting. I think thjat line has been on the reel for a while.

dont drop your rod on the last cast, treat it as a false cast fixed my mates casting by telling him that (over and over and over again until he would listen mind )

take the line off the reel-stretching it hand over hand as hard as you comfortably can, stacking it neatly on the floor into a corner of the room out of the way, stretch it back again taking care to stack it carefully, put an old towel over it and leave it ALONE,wind it back on the reel in the morning, might save £30-40
PS I like a few little kinks in the line coupla yards from the end- excellent bite indicator

Sounds like the line has alot of memory and needs stretching from what you describe. You did say it was an old line aswell.Everything you have said points towards the line and memory problems, old, been on reel a long time, coiling when taken off the reel and so on. New line perhaps the better option.

straightening the coily types is a temporary measure it comes back when its wound back onto the same reel that made it coily, if you wind line straight off the water there is a degree of tension that wins it onto the reel tightly too, but stick it warm water before stretching but dont wind it onto the reel till its cold.
