Question condition of river wharfe ???????

all last week the wharfe at tadcaster has been a light chocolate colour , i went to our club stretch yesterday just above harewood house and it was still the same ,i cant remember the wharfe being coloured for so long, being a spate river it usually runs out within a day or so ,which makes me wonder if there are any works going on further upstream than just above harewood house where our club stretch is ????does anyone know of anything ????

thanks,

bruce.

Bruce, I spoke to Mark Whitehead on Thursday and he mentioned that the Wharfe as looking pretty sick on Wednesday last week. He was so concerned that he looked for fish kills. It looks like there was a release form the dam above Bolton Abbey but it cleared overnight. Further downstream, we had the thunderstorm at Ilkley which probably discoloured the water even more.
Yes, it took a little longer probably because of the run off from the fields.

Exclamation YOU watched YOUR river die!

Ring EA..0800807060....if there are licensed outputs with consent they will know....if not then they need to know.
THEY will do the running around and checking.....its their job and they won't be upset even with a false alarm.
When you ring up make sure you are given a reference number as this will give you a guaranteed 'report back'.

A week of watching is too long.....you could be kicking yourself big time

Did you think of taking a sample of the water yourself.....even a basic look at the water in a milk bottle will indicate whether there are solids in suspension for example.
Sometimes even the smallest sample can be the hinge-pin in finding the culprit of pollution....especially if it goes down a river as a 'plug'.

I was looking at the ribble near Mitton yesterday evening - very low - very brown!
Most likely the colour is from continuing run off from recent localised thunderstorms.
The Hodder was running clear.

Hi Bruce

I've found your answer and posted it in the 'Yorkshire Waters' forum in 'Rivers' section.
