Default River Meig, Strathconon

I've got a week coming up at Strathconon in August. I'll look to fish Lochs Meig and Scardroy through LAAC, but my first love is river fishing for wild brownies.

Can anyone tell me what the River Meig is like for trout? Any visitor permits available?

The place I'm staying at is on the Strathconon Estate, so might be able to get access via the estate office?

Kev

when i was a lad of 15, i holidayed in Strathconon, with very little flyfishing knowledge managed to wangle my first brown trout from the river Meig before being told by an irate salmon angler to b*****R OFF! this is a very expensive salmon river Laddie!
been dying to get back there, due up there this September i'll be interested to know how you got on, what accommodation you have, and if the trout fishing is available.
when i was there i took a rowing boat out, bookable at the local post office(11 miles if i recall) strathpeffer. ther was good trout rising where the river flows into the loch, this was 30 years ago..........good luck.

The Achonachie permit covers the upper Meig so you should get access from that. I haven't fished the river but some of it is in very rocky gorges so be careful. Some cracking looking pools up there dying for a woolly ****** on a sink tip.
Remember some of the river is on the hydro scheme and the water level can increase very rapidly when they open the gates. I don't think there is any hydro above Loch Meig though.
Remember the midgie protection!

Thanks for the advice guys, and thanks particularly to Liath for the offer of fishing.

My week fishing the Strathconnon Estate was great fun. Loads of wild browns caught, fighting fit in a strong current. Fantastic place. See blog below for photos.

Just read your blog kev,

Looks to me like you had some excellent fishing, its amazing how well some of the northern salmon rivers fish for trout Just a pity its almost impossible to get a trout ticket on most of them.

A fine read, with some great pictures. I enjoyed it.
