Default Some things never change!

It s certainly true that the equipment has changed dramatically in the 30 years since I last fished. It is also true to say that the gear is MUCH cheaper (in real terms) than it was then.

One thing hasn't changed..... I've just returned from a 5 hour session on a local stocked lake.......with absolutely nothing!!

Oh well......at least I've saved wear and tear on my landing net!!

Incidentally I'm still using two fly lines which I bought in 1976....and they were 'seconds' then!!

It's only a couple of years ago that I stopped using a floating line that cost me exactly £1 from a tackle shop in Selkirk (Scottish Borders) while we were on holiday in 1773! I was still using a glass fibre rod and an ancient reel too - having not fished properly for trout for over twenty years I thought it was OK. What a difference it made when my wife bought me a complete new rod/reel/line for my birthday!

I was trying to edit the post but even cocked that up - obviously even I am not that old - meant 1973. I was 15 at the time!

You lads have done well to get that much use out of floating lines.

Bank fishing small stillwaters, particularly gravel pits and specially in the winter, is a good way to kn*ck*r floating lines inside 18 months, the abrasive effect of the mud and sand does for the line even if you clean it regularly.

My record for long fly line life was a "home made sink tip shooting head" bought from Bob Church's shop when he had a share in one, in about 1978. It was used regularly on reservoirs - I did try to look after it. I got over 20 years use and many Farmoor, Sutton Bingham, Eyebrook and Bristol reservoirs trout out of the line, but eventually all the plasticiser leached out and it went too stiff to use any more (oooh err )

Bye bye old friend - Steve Parton custom made a new one for me, which gets an airing from time to time on ressies.
