Default River Tweed

Hi i am new to this Forum
Six weeks ago i bought a permit to fish the St Boswells beat for trout including the upper and lower beats at Merton, after 10 visits i have not touched a thing
Bumped into a lot of other anglers and have yet to meet one who has caught anything
10 years ago i fished the same stretch of water, and allways caught fish I do not think the Tweed is as good water now for trout fishermen

p.s permit cost 30 pounds

Hello Les123,

Lucky enough to Salmon fish Lower Mertoun last September - what a glorious place. I watched a local bloke trout fishing and he was catching plenty of fish although I didn't notice what he was using.

Isn't the beat almost unfishable at the moment because of extremely low water?

Stick with it mate - anyday soon!

Default Trout fishing in Tweed

Been fishing the tweed and it's tributaries for the best part of sixty years and the fact is there are almost no takeable trout in the system. The only people catching trout are the contributers to fishing magazines. It's now so bad that selling trout permits must be tantamount to fraud.

I know at least one person who rents a beat on the Teviot who would disagree. And I've seen photos of a 6lb brownie taken IIRC in the last 12 months.

Edit : Come to that, just read the editorial of this month's T&S.

I'm somewhat bemused by this thread and the implication that The Tweed has no trout in it.

I've just come back (yesterday) from a holiday in St. Boswells and my first ever attempts at brown trout river fishing (rainbows in stocked lakes in the South of England are my usual).

After some enlightening and useful tips form the guy (Ian ?) who runs the Borders Gun Rooms in St Boswells (what an amazing shop that is) I caught a couple of 10" brown trout on dry fly - ok, not record breaking but I was well chuffed with my first wild trout and they tasted amazing.

So, is the River Tweed - one of the most famous fishing rivers in the world - really virtually devoid of brown trout, or are the claims in the thread above exagerated ?

I'd be interested in any views on trout in the Tweed from those who know it better.

never heard such pile of pish, plenty fish in the river system you just have to use the correct methods in the right bits of water, as for 30 quid a season, bargin! april 1st-30th september for trout and grayling and december-january for some of the best grayling fishing in the country where fish over 50cm are not uncommon.

Default River Tweed

Hey, I have fished in stretch of water at innerleithen & walkerburn on the Tweed for salmon and trout for a few years now, and think its safe to say that the Tweed is still loaded with trout.
Just because the stockies aren`t jumping onto any fly you chuck in the water, doesn`t mean there aren`t any troots in the water.
Best trout this year has been 2lb 6 1/2 on the fly and had lots morethe the 3/4`s to a pound range.
Load of sh.it the Tweed has no trout in it!
Also the salmon fishing up that end has also inproved in the last to years.

Thumbs up River Tweed

Have to agree with the recent posts in that anytime I have fished the Tweed this year there have been plenty of trout and grayling. Great value too at £30 for a season.
