Bris,
It is unlikely you will find this fly in with the commercial fly's in a shop. However you will find Coachman's, (see below). You may need to get a somebody to tie you up a couple. (If your stuck give me a PM)
Extract from Tom Stewarts book,
This is essentially a night-fishers fly, to fished at dusk & even into the hours of darkness in the manner of a large sedge.
In most respects the Hootlet is similar to a large version of the Coachman. It is usually dressed on a size 6 light wire hook.
In fishing this fly at night on lakes it is a good idea to use 2 on a 6ft cast.
Pattern:
Body - bronze peacock herl
hackle - dark ginger, put on after the wing as been tied in
Wing - The white or brown parts of a brown owl's wings, or a mix of both.
(Quotes from others on Owl substitues - The original wing material, which was owl wing, would be almost impossible for most people to acquire so I simply use a light coloured hen pheasant secondary.
Brown Owl: Now very difficult to obtain but once commonly employed and very useful. Any reddish-brown marginal covert feathers may be substituted and I recommend French Partridge hackles colored with a Pantone pen).
Hope this helps.
Regards
Amber
