bob,
you will find the 5wt line is to light for the 7 wt rod. you simply wont be able to load the rod.

Hi bobz,a five weight line will not load your rod properly, better get the line suited to your rod,an eight weight line will give you the best performance.Try the pitsford pirate for lines and he will keep you right

Hell mate you have a long and eventful journey in to fly fishing in front of you, but couldn't be in a better place than on this forum.
Match your line with your rod, but a weight higher may help you in your casting
i.e a 6# line on a 5#rod or a 8# line on a 7# rod
good luck on your journey.

The term load your rod refers to the weight of the line making your rod flex correctly in your casting so that you can achieve the best distance possible, but remember practice, practice and more practice. So get out there!

can i have a go,

bobz, the weight of your line should be matched to the strength of bend in your rod, this creates a balance which casts easily and efficiently.

too light a line may not flex the rod enough resulting in the rod not having enough weight to spring against, too heavy a line may overload the power of the rod resulting in a slow, spongy cast.

Totally agree with what Zoomer says, also too heavy a line may also snap your rod

where on earth did you hear that?

lines are rated by the first 30'....if its a #5 with 30' out is going to be a #6 with more out and so on.
