Default Ever caught a bat?

I was fishing Wansford last night and as it neared dusk I put a Sedge on and enjoyed some fantastic sport.

As the darkness came the bats came out and three of them where diving down to take the fly, one even having a go whilst the Sedge was in the air.

Luckily I avoided hooking one, the trout beat them to it every time. Anyone else seen this before?

Jim.

Yes I'm affraid I have on several occasions while sea trout fishing. These encounters have been accidental collisions with the fly rather than an attempt to catch the fly by the bat.

Unfortunately a large sea trout fly (especially a tube) does no favours to a bats delicate wing membranes/body and have sadly had to administer the coup de gras on more than one occasion.

My brother hooked one through the edge of its wing recently. I managed to get the hook out (it was barbed) but i feel i probably did irrepairable damage. I'd like to think it recovered though...

Seems to me its an unavoidable thing during night time fishing...

Bats do carry rabies but I think that there would have to be rabies endemic in the country to pose a threat, so UK bats are probably OK.

I have caught a bat and frequently get them hitting the floating line whilst sewin fishing. I have also caught swans, gulls, a sand martin and a duck.

The oddest thing I have ever caught was an eel on dry fly.

Was playing at square leg once when the batsman let go a hook, and the bat, so I caught it, one handed, by the handle. The keeper took the ball off a snick. Had to hand the bat to him on his way back on the way to the pavillion, but I couldn't stop smiling for the rest of the match. We lost.
