Default Mayflies and morals and awesome video

See below guidance notes put together to help pupils (year 8 and above) explore some thinking behind the values we put on our rivers. This is going out as part of the "Mayfly in the Classroom" activities that I'm running out of the WTT's Trout in the Town project (but of course this is equally applicable to rural schools and streams). Go here for the rest of the resources:

This video of the monster mayfly hatches in Hungary captivated the pupils that it was shown to in a local school (cool aerial trout interceptions of adult mayflies!)

Great video! Huge mayflies, and some bloody huge fish!

What a weird lifecycle they have, they emerge purely to mate and that's it! No mouths or stomachs to feed, just to mate!

Hi Paul,

I would just like to say, how much I enjoyed reading the educational blog, May Flies in the class-room & Trout in the town project on the WTT web-site!

The May fly video was excellent; and the link too : The river Colne heroes and the Sheffield SPRITE videos, were a real incentive ! It just goes show what can be achieved when people pull together for the good of our environment!!

I also think that Education is the way forward to achieve a better understanding of the environment and how conservation of our town & country-side rivers and stream, could create a cleaner, better; and far more self sustainable future for the environment and all it's inhabitants!!

How can we educate the adult population; and stop them from using the Rivers as dumping grounds? The demise of heavy industry has allowed our rivers to become less polluted, cleaner and self sustainable waterways!
The biggest problem for urban rivers & streams; is "Human Abuse" Education in schools of environment issues, seems to be the way forward!

I congratulate you on your endeavour; and wish you every success on the project!

Thanks Paul.

Mostyn

Many thanks for the feedback - it is great to hear when things have struck the right chord with people.

Don't be shy in recommending the Mayfly in the Classroom to school teachers that you might know! Especially if you are willing/able to kick sample a few nearly mature nymphs and supply them to the school (they should be able to do the rest from the instruction manual!)
