fishing is always harder when it's very bright but damsels montanas & hares ears in the top 2-3ft on a floating line should still take fish according to my mole!!

welcome to the forum!!

Default Blankety Blank

Had a similar experience myself lately, only X 3. Hopefully will get down there after work on Thursday as I don't like any water to get the better of me. Have seen fish coming out from next to me, GRHE with a yellow or green hothead if I remember correctly. Had a conversation with one of the locals last time I was there, which was a week ago last Friday and he told me that crunchers were doing the business. He also told me to avoid Thursdays and Friday as they stocked on a Thursday and the catches took a dive (what a diabolical pun!). Should have asked him what he was doing there then, but did not think of that until I had left. I'll keep plugging away until I get a result, there are plenty in there and you can see them, which does not make it any easier I know. I'll let you know how I get on, all I have managed to land is some lovely little Perch about 6ozs which gobbled up anything olive I put on.

All the best

Hi there, welcome to forum!

Syon Park can be a tricky place to fish. Often, the fish will shoal up and if you don't find them, you might not catch. It's always best to move around. However, I have found the most productive places to fish are right at the end on the far side just before the large trees which overhang the water, you'll see a bench, and between the bench and the next smaller trees, this is the deepest part of the lake. Also, on the other side of the lake, by the big tree, is quite good as well. Sometimes in the summer, the fish shoal up under the big trees at the end of the lake.
Fly selection is obvoiusly important too. When I go, I always use GRHE's, blue flash damsels and daddy long legs and they seem to work.
Keep an eye on the Albury Estate website as they give a daily fishing report with catches and flies used.
I personally wouldn't bother going to Syon Park in the summer. The water get hots and fish don't like it. It also gets quite weedy.
Keep an eye on here too, there are social gatherings at fisheries in the south of England and are well attended, everyone welcome with tips and advice given!

Hope that helps!

When the fish do hole up amongst the trees it can be challenging casting so always look behind before casting.

Do the boys still come down from Harrow sporting their boaters?

No idea mate!!

Its very challenging casting when they are under the trees, be perpared to lose flies! Its even more of a challenge getting the fish to the net but good fun!!

I love fishing under the trees so do lots of people who fish Syon, you often find a queue waiting to take a turn to fish there although it can be a challenge to cast,it is usually worth the effort, as the fish that cruise around under the trees do seem eager to take a fly and are not easily spooked.
I would agree with you about the fish tending to shoal up,but that is only a problem for lazy gits who can't be bothered to move around!
As for flies, Damsel and GRHE would be my top choice and if they're not in a mood to feed, then the good old Cats Whisker can always be relied upon to save the day

Blue flash damsel is killer there. But I still prefer dry fly fishing at Syon. My general rule there, though, is that if you can't see the fish then you're very likely going to blank. So take a good look around for surface or near surface activity.

I've not been for a few weeks now. How's the weed? I suspect it's simply awful at the moment.

You could try the infamous Black and Tan nymph as used by Mr. Pope. Never seen this fly nor the tying but just about every report I ever saw about Syon this fly and Mr. Pope where always mentioned together. I had a season ticket there for a couple of years a few years back. Had some interesting days there but not fished it since.
