Default Free Hampshire River Fishing,.

Afternoon gents, Can anyone recomend any free river fishing in Hampshire?
I have fished the Itchen at Twyford but am getting upset with people trying to tell me it's private!!
Any recomendations welcome.

Thanks

Suitable for fly fishing, or for bait fishing only ?

The Itchen is free from below Gaters Mill at the end of the Lower Itchen Fishery at Mansbridge, past the White Swan Pub and through the park on the other side of the A27. But urban / suburban fishing so really only suitable for bait fishing - chub, grayling, a few brownies and sea trout, and a chance of a barbel.

Demand exceeds supply in Hampshire, to say the least .

But I believe there is some free fishing, again on the Itchen, in Winchester city centre and some folks fly fish it.

There is, below the wiers, but again a very busy section of footpath behind you. Contact Winchester City Council for details. The Itchen navigation below the college is also free, but it's like a dead canal.

Which section are you fishing at Twyford, it could be private after all

Very hard to find any reasonably -priced river fishing in Hampshire. Many stillwater fisheries claim to have a carrier or some tributary of a major river on site but they're usually 2' wide ("challenging") and nbg in my experience. Joining the Salisbury angling Club would be the cheapest nearby bet.

From Shawford upto the first old loch gate by Twyford water meadows is free. From there up the fishing rights belong to Portsmouth services. Untill this season we only had fishing from one bank but this season we have also rented the other as well. I can assure you that I am correct in telling you this as I am the beat keeper for this stretch.
regards Kenny

Kenny, is the new stretch you are renting one that was previously free? If so it's important to know for those looking at previous posts on here, also on other websites.......

You could try the Houghton Club stretch I hear they are very welcoming, open and progressive club

Salisbury is you best bet. Someone forwarded to me a London Anglers club which had very cheap day tickets for both course and game sections. I will try to find it.

Hi actually I got it wrong. It is fishing on the Hampshire Avon. I had meant to join this association as it has some amazing waters at an amazingly low cost:
