Default Buzzers

Cant understand why, sometimes Rainbows go mad for Buzzers,
then other times when fishing the same venue and conditions are the same,
and they are hatching, they are not interested, even when trying different buzzer colours and sizes, and fishing at various depths,
Any ideas?

I'll reply with some thoughts, I have had days where they would only look at buzzers, then day when a cetain colour would always be taken, they can become very fixated on a set food item, although never seen a Cats Whisker hatch!! The taking of lures is from agression.

Buzzer fishing is an art in itself, the days when you think the conditions are the same may have subtle changes meaning the fish don't switch on the way you would expect them to, even though all seems as good as last Tuesday when they hammered buzzers all morning and it windy with a gentle breeze.

As for pics, I'll see what I can do in the coming weeks.

I'll share another thought for you too...........I have just returned to Trout's fishing after a long lay off, and having started from scratch again, I can honestly say that flinging huge bits of fluuf around for Trout's wasnt going to be my bag this time!

I now get heaps of pleasure out of trying to catch them on what I always thought years ago, was the 'purist' method..........namely buzzers and nymphs.

I have been fishing Grafham quite regularly, and some evenings the fish are mad for black buzzers, you catch one, spoon it and its rammed to the gills with big black ones. A couple of buzzers fished slowly and you catch.

The Norfolk & Suffolk fly fishers lake where we are also members, can fish amazingly well on Buzzers, and being clear it fantatsic being able to watch the Trout's reaction to your flies.

Last night at Grafham, the fish were on the top, it was raining, sedges were hatching, and it was a muggy damp evening. I tried the 'New To Me' approach of suspending a couple of buzzers down the line supported by a booby on the point, and just like the last couple of times Ive tried it......NOTHING!

Moved around the resevoir, water was less coloured and Trout's all over the place, second cast with a sedge dry, wallop, then about 10 mins later again. Shortly after the fished stopped rising, but were obviously still around, so i went back to 3 buzzers fished slowly, only this time without the booby.........Nothing.

I have come to a conclusion that I have 'Far From Mastered It', and that Trout can be whyly little buggers at times!

regards
Jas.

At our local water (Barnsfold) you get good buzzer fishing. Small black sz16, larger sizes and suspender buzzers (try them instead of the washing line maybe?)
One guy does well on a "greased up" leader and fly, putting the buzzer right in the surface film. Greasing the leader seems to go against what they say about degreasing the leader to hide it under the film, but it works!
I tried this method a week ago and got a take casting to a rising fish, wallop, right off the top with an epoxy black buzzer.

Stan Headley did a buzzer article in T&S last month, with a pattern that I'm going to try using red holo as the base body with black spanflex over letting the holo "rib" through the black overbody.

Can anyone put up a photo of this Buzzer?

This is what makes fishing interesting! So many things to consider with presentation, size etc. Colour I find just needs to be in the ballpark.

Often just a small change in presentation can be key. It is odd though that in a big rise a switch to a lure, can get takes instantly. This seems to be the case if there are a lot of fish in the area, maybe racing each other for the large food morsel?

Sometimes its easy to be way off the mark and miss other potential and less obvious (to us) foods or even miss the peak feeding times? I have caught fin perfect fish on static blobs, big browns on consett budgies and daddy feeding fish on black boobies. It often doesnt make sense.

No. lol. But try also a simple black floss body with white breathers and pheasant tail wingcase. Over rib the body with red holographic tinsel. Varnish over. Sizes 10>16. Simple. Effective.
