What worked 15 years ago still works today. I say just go fishing and don't worry about it. Good old monofiliment tippet and leaders still work and I use them all the time.

Now's not the time to driver yourself crazy trying to separate the real advances from the marketing hype, especially considering the fact that many of these "new" products like floro tippet have specific applications where they excel, but in other applications they don't actually perform very well. So it's not as simple as saying this one is bad, this one is good, it all depends.

Just to reassure you that you aren't at any disadvantage because you aren't using the latest and greatest of everything. The clothes don't make the man and the gear doesn't make the angler.

Thumbs up

After all, monks used to catch carp from their stock pools in the Middle Ages with a piece of will branch, line made of horse tail hairs and big old hooks, hammered out by blacksmiths lol.

you don't need up to date tackle to catch fish

seriously trying to remember what fishing was like 15 years ago!!
leader materials are a lot finer
flouro carbons sink faster good for wets and nymphs will pull dry flies under
co-polymers sink less fast good for dry fly- after using mono you will find you will be able to feel the trouts teeth scraping the line it's a little un-nerving

You haven't missed much. Grouse is quite right about the marketing hype. Most of the flashy new gear is designed to catch anglers' wallets.

Looking back 20 years, one thing that has definitely improved is the quality of budget rods, in my mind there is no comparison, 20 years ago £25 would get you some crappy fibre glass or low quality carbon rod, for £30-40 today there are some good quality rods around.
