Question Turning follows into takes

I fished at Chalk Springs last weekend and attempted to stalk some of the bigger fish using imitative patterns and also trying the 'induced take'.
I came close to hooking a brownie which must have been well into double figures but the fish turned away at the very last second before taking the fly
I experienced this with other fish during the day. Does anyone know how best to turn these follows into takes?

I'm also interested in your favourite stalking fly patterns.... which ones you wouldn't want to leave at home on a session. My favourites include various nymphs and bugs (GRHE, PTnymphs, damsels, corixa, chompers, killer bug) but having some success on stalking bugs at the moment.

Just change your retrieve as they follow. A quick little jerk and a pause etc
Usually a change of speed or even stopping induces a take

Very annoying when fish do thatthough. They need to behave

I was always told that if a fish follows, try speeding up a fraction - as if trying to escape. Works for me sometimes
