Default People fishing out of season

Hello every one firstly I would like to thank the people who welcomed me to the forum (you know who you are)
Any way to the point I'm lucky enough to live oxfordshire with many fishing opportunitys one of which being large stretches of the river Thames. Over the course of the weekend I had the chance to take the good lady out for a spot of lunch down at the rose revived at new bridge which sits right on the river. Whilst sat in the garden I noticed the familiar barbeque going with smoke billowing all over the place as I looked on I saw a rod tip poking out of a hedge so of course thinking that some of our east European guests were enjoying a bleak feast I decided to have a look now as it happens I had my rod licence in my wallet having just had it laminated(sad I know) so any way off I go brandishing my licence like a new deputy sherrif any way to my surpise there's a mum and two kids fishing away so out comes the rod licence the next two minutes went like this
Me can I see your rod licence madam
Madam Whats a rod licence
Me so I take it you don't have one oh dear that could be a big fine
Madam do I need one
Me yes also do you know your fishing out of season
Madam what season
Me oh dear that could be an even bigger fine what I suggest you do is pack up
Madam ok
Well I must say I felt like a git but better me to tell them than an ea baliff

Sounds like you just ruined a perfectly nice family day out to me.

How old were these children? Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure you dont need a licence if your under 12. Was there any evidence at all that they were cooking any fish on said BBQ? How do you know what they we're fishing for and therefor that it was out of season?

You must have been really surprised to find that there wasn't any eastern europeans there, especially when it was so 'obvious' that you would assume that when you saw that they we're having a BBQ. What an anomaly, everyone knows only eastern europeans have BBQ's by the river...

Well, they were fishing out of season.....

Best approach would possibly have been to suggest they stop fishing now but offer them a lesson on or after the 16th of June?

Should have just kicked them into the water and taken all their gear as well, you condescending, power tripping fascist.

Out of interest, would you have still gone over, had they been three skinhead Lithuanians?

Coarse fishing on rivers starts on 16th June, but trout on a fly/spinner is fine now right?

Yeah if you're under 12 you dont need a licence. I tried to say I was 12 but it doesn't always work

No harm in you telling them that mate. I think it's all about the way you do tell people things.
If you're nice and apologetic about it, but also care free and just giving advice, then that goes down a lot better than telling them to move NOW! LOL

But yes, better you than a baliff...if they were over 12

strange, i generally encourage kids, surely explaining what is and isnt in season, would have been more helpfull if they dont know,

out of curiosity...what were you fishing for? if it was in season for you, why not them?

I'd have advised them on the laws and seasons as well and have done so in the past so I wouldn't feel bad about it.
