Default Early morning trout?

As it's going to be hot this weekend I am toying with the idea of getting up early tomorrow (on the water for 0600?) and getting 3-4 hours before the sun really gets up.

What I am not sure about (being a relative begineer still) is, are the fish likely to be feeding at this time? Or am I just wasting my time?

Cheers

Richard

Hi Richard,

You should be ok, but it depends on the water.

A few seasons ago at this time of year my wife missed the best of the day on the Tees by joining me at 6.30am.

The fish were going nuts at 5.30 and by 6.00 had slowed right down.

Good luck!

Some of the best fishing is to be had in the first couple of hours of daylight... and the last, AKA the morning and evening rises.

Not wanting to arise at an ungodly hour I always preferred the evening rise myself.

Deffinately worth a go.... try small pheasant tail's in around 16's or 18's. If the fish are starting to rise, im finding the bigger dries are working well. Im finding Stuie Olive's are working well, you can find this fly from one of Charles Jardines many articles in magazines.
Hope this helps,
Terry

No Problem,
I'm at work at the minute but when i get home will get one on the vice and show you all.
It's one of the easiest but most effective flies you will see.
All it is is:
- Use a 103bl size 15.
- Tie on olive silk.
- Take one turn down the body and then one turn up the bosy stopping 2/3's of the way up.
- Tie in some CDC (3 or 4 feathers) facing down the shank.
- Dub hare's ear from there upwards to the head.
- Fold the CDC wing up to the head of the fly.
- Secure with three turns ontop of the CDC
- Three turns below to hold the wing up
- And finish off

Will get you the pics once im home.
Terry

What the hell, I'll give it a whirl. If nothing else it will be peaceful - I'd put money down that I'll be the only one there. Last couple of times I've been I've got there about 0830-0845 and there's only ever been one other person there before me.

First few hours is by far the best hours of the day. As a rule a decent rise needs air temp higher than water temp. On hot days sometimes the evening rise fails as a result but conversely it rarely effects the morning sport

The only problem is many fisheries only 'open' at 8am.

Hanningfield for example only lets you out on the boats for 8am.

I, for one, much prefer the early shot especially after years of fishing the salt in South Africa where one launches the boats in the Summer from first light or even in the dark if it is a full moon.
