There's a similar place in Rutland not sure what they charge but it's not cheap, there was a thread about it a while back. I agree with you, although they maybe Salmon I don't think it can be any different to catching large grown on Rainbows. I certainly wouldn't pay £150 for the pleasure, that's if you can get any from dragging over weight unfit pellet pigs from a pond.

Default Palm Springs !

The Place in Rutland is called Palm Springs....I think...

It's at Greetham near the golf course and thats also £150

It's also small at about 2 acres i'm told !

Would I pay to fish there........Yes....but i'd only do it once a year....probably around Christmas when the reservoirs are shut.. or i think the novelty would wear off.

Small pond full of big stockies it may be...but I just love hooking and catching fish....

On that not I love a trip to Lechlade once a year (again over the winter period) I love it...it's something different for me..

Lets look at it another way....if there's no demand for such a water it'll soon close... so if some anglers like to fish there on a regular basis who cares....let them it doesn't affect us......it'll mean the banks of Rutland are less crowded

You are totally right of cause Rob, what ever floats your boat and all that!!

Just that I would rather catch that double figure trophy fish from Rutland or Grafham, than drag on over fed unfit slab from a 2 acre pond and if I never catch one so be it. Have you seen that picture of Craig with his 15lb+ Brownie from Chew, the smile says it all, he's probably still grinning like it now!

Smile what one hundred and fifty pounds gets me

My club waters consist of three lochs of about 100 acres with natural wild brown trout ,two of which produce nearly every year fish in the 8 to 10lb class, in these two waters the average is abouta pound and a half per fish, the other one produces 4 to the pound on average, then we have two other brownie only waters that have a few stock fish put in each season only about a pound in weight, these two also average out about 1lb and a half per fish, and produce fish in the 4 to 5 pound class each year, these 2 are about 40 acres in size, then we have our waters with rainbows in, which are three in total ,one of over 80 acres and two about 35 to 40 acres, these also get a few brownies put in every season average about 1lb and produce one or two up to 9 to 10lbs each year, these are also stocked with rainbows averaging 1 and half to 2 and a half lbs and can fished everyday. NOT BAD FOR £150 PER YEAR :

£150 for a days fishing is a lot but would you prefer a stocked water with a
more or less guarantee of catching a "salmon" or fish a natural/wild water with no guarantee at all?

Personally its the wild water for me every time, much greater satisfaction catching a truly wild fish once every blue moon than a stocked fish in a closed environment. But everyone to their own I would not criticise any angler who prefers the alternative, fish the way you enjoy the most.

Default Fat Fish....!

I'm not saying that i would want to fish these ponds every day.....far from it in fact.....once a year for a change and a laugh...nothing more...

And to me there is no difference in catching a 2lb stockie or a 20lb stockie i wouldn't call either a trophy fish....just stupid stockies....

To me a trophy fish varies...and it depends upon the water and what's in it....on some wild lochs a 2lb wild fish is special....

I just love reservoirs, this is where i feel most at home; and consider myself fortunate to fish them... over this weekend i've had some fantastic sport on Rutland, mostly on the nymphs....browns of 6lb 1oz, 4lb 7oz...and 5 rainbows over 4lb......does it get any better ??

Take these places as what they are......fun for a one off trip in winter when everywhere else is closed and a treat...but don't delude yourself that it's real fishing...

As for Craig's and Oakam Orange's monster browns........well i'm envious to say the least, special fish....and I've already congratulated them both....

I'm still having nightmares about the 15lb+ brown I lost at the net at Grafham a couple of years back...through bad angling !.........it haunts me to this day !

I shouldn't bite, but i can't resist...

Can those who above have referred to 'pellet pigs' and 'stupid stockies' actually fished for them? have you torn your hair out as that 19lb brown turns away from your fly, again, or that big rainbow disappears just as the sun goes behind a cloud?

I fish small stillwaters for big fish, and i fish big stillwaters and rivers too. I just don't see why sticking a blob on a DI7 and happening to latch into a big brown is more skillful than outwitting one on a nymph from a clear water fishery? Don't get me wrong i'd sell my soul for a double figure grafham fish but i wouldn't regard it more skillful than a big fish from a small stillwater, just rarer, and perhaps more 'special' because of that. As i've said before, the double figure wild trout i caught from corrib could just as easily have been a pounder. I was just in the right place, at the right time, and fishing no differently from my usual style.

Horses for courses.
