Default Visiting Plymouth from South Africa.

Hi guys,great forum.

I am coming home to Plymouth on a flying visit in June from the 22-25th in that short time i want to fish for a day,now i need to keep my travel bag light so will be only bringing a 5/6# and a box full of dries 14-20 and Nymph's 12-20,i have my eye on going to Arundell arms because of its location to where i will be staying,i have visited the website and seems to give me a lot of options,my problem is which beat/fish should i target and should i bring a different rod weight to give myself more options? I have most weights and set ups so any advice would be good.

1.beat to be as near to Lifton as poss?
2.Is it a little to early for the salmon?
3.which beat would give me the best chance of catching more than 1 type of trout?
4.Could i get a brown, rainbow and sea trout on the same beat?
5.Best rod setup

If i can help anyone heading to SA,your more than welcome to contact me
on the SA Flytalk Forum www.flytalk.co.za My forum name there is Nicholas.

Thanks in Advance Nick.

Nicholas it will all depend on rain if there are Salmon in the beats.

There will be plenty of Seatrout and browns but i don't think there will be any rainbow's.

There will also be Grayling on the Tamar but i'm not sure if there this high up.

The best bet would be to send Tim or David an email asking for advise as both will be only to glad to help.

Thanks for the reply,WCB, i would be quite happy fishing for browns and sea trout only as i have never caught either (stocked browns but never wild) i will contact them but just to bend your ear if i can would a 3# be rod enough for the sea trout. Really looking forward to coming home and just want to get as ready as i can on this side so do not spend any lost time when i arrive at the venue, what flies would you recommend for the sea trout?, i have plenty of ammo for the browns.

Cheers Nick

Nick,

Your #5/6 would be OK if limited to one rod provided that it's not longer than 9'. The ideal trout rod for most of the Arundel Arms waters would be something like a 8 - 8'6" #4 but on the main Tamar the 9' would be OK and it would be ideal for sea trout. If you can take two rods take a 9' #5 and a 7'6" or 8' #3 or 4.

The river species are wild browns (generally not too big), sea trout and salmon. By the end of June there will certainly be sea trout there but although there will be the odd salmon it's a little too early for the best of the salmon. I've not heard of many grayling in the Tamar up there.

The only rainbows are in a small stillwater pool (old quarry) in Lifton, the water is often very clear and the fishing pretty good at times and there is the odd huge brown in there. It is used as a back up if the rivers flood but I enjoyed a day on it.

Apart from salmon, the best fishing is probably on the smaller streams and not the main Tamar. The Lyd is good for sea trout with some browns as well, and the Wolf and Carey for wild browns and don't see so many sea trout but they are further from the hotel. The sea trout are not normally very big and 3lbs is a good fish so lighter gear is OK as long as it can throw the fly.

Unless the river is high and/or coloured the sea trout fishing will be at night so maybe try a brown trout beat in the day and get on the Lyd at night but check it in the daylight so that you can see where you will be wading and casting.

Hope this helps.
