Default Size 10 Trout Flies Security Threat

On going through airport security at Inverness this morning i had to hand over 16 flies that were in my wallet. They did say that i could post them to myself, but i was just so ****** off that i told them that they could have them.
I then spent the flight trying to figure out ways that i could threaten, maim or possibly kill someone with 16 trout flies. "Take me somewhere warm and exotic or i'll set the killer flies loose in the cabin". Nah i just can't see that working. In fact i couldn't think of any way that they could be considered a threat except to a trout.

Bloody madness.

It's a good job they were on the ball with that one. My mate discovered that they quite like to 'confiscate' dangerous spools of expensive fluorocarbon too. But what is stopping you going through to duty free, picking up a couple of bottles of brandy, hitting the pilot over the head with one and constructing a make-shift molatov cocktail with the other?

Personally I think it's theft as they intend to permanently to deprive you of your property.
My mate was told his reels were a security threat in the US so he put them in his hold bag.
In greenland I had a knife on my belt, they took it off me and put it in a small box. Gave it to the pilot and said we would be reunited in Copenhagen - we were much to my surprise!
It's all down to interpretation.

This is the problem with airport security these days--wildly inconsistent interpretation of rules that are vague to say the least combined with the fact that there's nowhere for passengers to look up the rules so they can know with certainty what is/in not allowed.

There's nothing you can do about it and that's why I say when you travel, just put anything and everything that's fishing related in the checked luggage and be done with it. Anything that isn't clothing, paper, or computer-related is going to catch the attention of dim-witted security, so there's absolutely no point in pushing your luck.

I fully agree with Grouse. I was in the group that IanG referred to and there is no doubt that the fluoro in question disappeared into the security cop's pocket to be used by himself or given to a mate. I go to Austria two or three times a year and have learned that ALL fishing kit apart from waders and wading boots go as checked luggage. The two latter plus camera go as hand luggage in a case of the correct size. There is absolutely no point in standing at check-in arguing the toss because you will lose, and they will be looking for you on the way home because there is now an entry on the computer that says you are a problem.

I flew through Australia on my way to Christchurch, stopped for the day in Sydney. When i got bacjk through customs they searched my hand luggage, as they do. They found some boxes of flies (i didnt mind being separated from my clothes but not my tackle!)

There was a conflab with the supervisors on the "dangers" of these flies, but they agreed in the end that they were not of concern.

Like its been said, its a shame that there are no hard and fast rules that can be consulted.
