Default Fly line colour

Any views on fly line colour for fishing small streams & rivers? Is a drab colour better than a bright one in that it is less likely to spook the fish.....or doesn't it matter?

Regards

Peter

Hi Peter,
You are right the first time. Years ago I even went to the extreme of trying to dye mine into camo etc. I now use a Terenzio Artificial Silk line which is difficult to both in the air and on the water due to thinness.
I have also read that pale blue (sky) or white is a better preference. Indeed, if you look at the bottom of war planes they are these colours. Must be something in it.
For me, I wouldn't go for bright. You could think about a Cortland Sylk line. Dull, thin and cast very well.

Hi Peter
My personal preference is for a dull olive line. I used to dye my own but now there are a variety ready made. I'm currently using an Orvis Generation 3 which loads my 4wt beautifully. Dull coloured lines give me confidence, after all we tend to dress in muted colours when we go fishing, so why wave some fluorescent yellow or orange line over the fishes heads to advertise the fact that we are there? On small rivers and streams stealth is all important, so why run the risk of spooking fish with a bright garish line?
When I'm fishing reservoirs it is different. I opt for high vis lines, especially when fishing at distance as I can see what is happening long before I feel a take.
