Default To buy or not to buy ???

Hi, I'm a newby and have just found the forum.
Need some advice here, been trout fishing for the past 4 -5 years always on small to medium sized stillwater put and takes.
Have now been fortunate enough to join the Salisbury Angling Club who have some of the best, (so I'm told), chalk stream/river fishing in the country.
I've invested in a Snowbee #4/5 rod and was about to buy the matching reel, when I stopped to think, do I really need a seperate reel or can I just use my Greys GRXi 7/8 with a seperate cassette loaded with the right line?
Would really appreciate your views as I'm desperately trying not to become a "tackle *****".
Cheers,
TC

I would suggest that you buy a new reel sorry. The GRXi 7/8 weighs 7 1/4 ozs which might make the set up out of balance. A Snowbee Geo 4/5 for example weighs 4 1/4 ozs approx.
I'd never given much thought to balancing rod/reel before but a few weeks ago I used my mates set up and it did make a difference in my opinion. Cast a bit further and felt comfortable and didn't use so much energy casting which was a nice change. Made me go and buy to balance my set up and it was money well spent. Hopefully more experienced anglers will chip in with advice as well.

Welcome to the forum. There is nothing that says you could not use your GRXi,But I would recommend you buy a smaller reel, Purely from the ease of use point of view. The GRXi is a big lump of a reel. and if you can get away with weight reduction you should go for it.

Yup has to be a new reel!

Imagine you have size 5 feet and you wore size 10 shoes

Your feet would fit,but it wouldn't be very comfortable!

Something like a Scierra EDP 4/5 wouldn't cost you more than £30 as it's been discontinued but it's a cracking little reel. See if Grommit off the forum (Ian Woods) at Game Fishing Supplies has any left. He gives 10% discount to forum users via the offer code DFF612(username).

Gary Evans also had them on offer.

I'd echo Jim's comments. You don't need a new reel, but you should certainly get one. the 4 weight will sit better rather than be tight to the spool of the 7/8 weight reel and tbh, it'll look better on your 4 weight. I don't fish much with a 3/4 weight rod, but wanted one nonetheless. In the end i got a greys G-Series reel, which is very well made, and cheap as chips. personally i think it's better than the Grxi.
