Question Contacting Angling clubs, how do you do it?

Hi guys,

It seems to me that some angling clubs are very open and easy to find information on, to the point of having their own website with every bit of information you could want, and others are like secret societies where if you haven't been born into the correct click then you don't have a hope in hell of finding the clubs at all!!

Trying to find out the owners of certain parts of rivers is hard enough, but there have been a few rivers I have come across in which signs have been put up to say who owns them. GREAT me thinks, until I realise these signs don't actually portray any contact details for the clubs. I have tried searching the internet, yellow pages and a "local" tackle shop (well as local as I could find) with absolutely no joy what so ever.

So, I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of how I could go about and try and find out who these clubs are and how to contact them? Would it just be a case of roaming other tackle shops further afield or is there some other way? Some of these rivers are exactly the type of water I'm looking for and it is so frustrating not being able to find how to contact these clubs.

I hope someone may be able to point me in the right direction and look forward to any responses.

Many thanks

Gary

And,of course,if it runs through the farmers land he might be able to give you permission to fish his part .

You could possibly tell us which clubs you were trying to get in touch with?

Why don't you list some of the waters or names of clubs on the signs here. You may get a reply openly or more likely via a PM.

The amount of really useful information I have had via PM from people who really didn't want to broadcast to all is quite amazing.

Many thanks for the replies so far.

In response to which clubs I have found there are three clubs in particular that I would be interested in finding out about: West Denton & District AC, Hartburn Angling Association (both have stretches on the river Wansbeck) and especially Dinnington Angling Association which has water on the River Blyth / River Pont.

Thanks again

Gary

Blimey, three tough ones there – I see what you mean about them being hard to track down! There's a Dinnington club member on the (useless) ne-fishing forum. I remember a while back he was going to dig out contact details for the club for someone. It might be worth joining and PMing him to pick his brains.

I seem to remember you drawing a blank at Game Fishing Supplies in Morpeth. In which case, I'd try asking in Frasers in Gateshead and in Bagnall and Kirkwood in Newcastle as well.

You could also try getting in touch with David Carrick, who does the Northumberland river reports for Trout and Salmon. (His number and email address are in the magazine.) I'm sure the Journal's angling correspondent would have contact details for all the local clubs, as would Railton Howes, who does the fishing show on Radio Newcastle.

Also, the EA would, I would have thought, had contact with most, it not all, the local clubs, who they'd need to speak to about stocking, pollution etc on their stretches.

Good luck!

Thanks Yorkio, some good points of contact to try there which I never even thought of.

And yes you are quite right I didn't get anywhere with the guy in Game Fishing Supplies (I'm positive it wasn't Grommit as I've heard he will fall over backwards to help out).

I'm already a member of the ne-fishing site so have had a look at the post you suggested and have yet another club to add to my request list Seaton Burn Angling Association. I've also PM'd a couple of the guys who seemed to know about the River Pont about the clubs.

Thanks again

Gary
