Default TWO Questions & Some Observations on Tippet Material

Hi All,

We have had many discussions on leader and tippet material on this forum, like what's the best brand? fluorocarbon or co,polymer, or even plain old MONO! - Reading some of what's been written on the subject; one could really become confused about it all!!

I have, in the last two seasons, bought several kinds of, tippet & leader material.

Airflo : Ultra strong co,polymer, from 10LB, to 3LB. It's not bad!

Airflo : Sight free G3, Fluorocarbon from 6LB to 2LB. it's pretty good!

Airflo : Sight free Platinum Fluorocarbon, 6Lb to 3LB. I don't like this one!

The plastic spool size on all the above is just right 100m, spool easy to carry!
- You can also fit it on a tippet or spool holder, the size is just right.

I have also bought, on the basis of many recommendations, on the FFF, : ---

Stroft : 100m, GTM Monofil, 4LB, and 3LB, it's pretty good to use; but the plastic spool it comes on, is huge, and a bug-ger to carry with you when fishing! - I also bought some Drennan Float-Fish, 100m, 2LB, same problem as the Stroft spools : TOO BIG!

Wouldn't it be nice, if the manufacturers of this stuff, put some thought in to their packaging, they could fit 100m, of Mono material, on a plastic spool about a-quarter of the size they are currently using! Lets hope some of them read this!! ----END OF OBSERVATIONS!

Questions: I read on another forum a discussion on the affect Fluorocarbon will have on the environment in the future if we continue to use it, as it is apparently "Not Bio-degradable" What are your thoughts??

What is you preference of material; and what brand names would you recommend? I have recently bought some Drennan Sub-Surface, again as recommended by others, I have used it for Leader make up; and so far it's excellent! - I've also used it as my tippet material, for wet-fly, nymph and dry-fly fishing, I'm pleased with the results so far; and it comes on smaller spools for 50m lengths, making it easier to carry! - Any one else use Drennan Sub-Surface?

if you can take it up above the atmosphere it will start to break down..... but then it will release radicals that break down the ozone layer.... not good.... to be fair, a lot of stuff doesnt break down, and as long as you take the stuff home it shouldn't matter.

a bit of flurocarbon doesnt take up much space.

i'm pretty sure stoft do 50m spools, but there hard to get hold of, which is a shame, they would do very well.

i like sight free G3(the darker blue spool one?) Fluorocarbon, for copolymer, whatever is available.

small spools sound tempting but might cause coiling,

As Jonnied knows, I use Orvis Super Strong for the butt sections and Frog Hair for the end sections. Really good stuff but can get expensive etc. And I use Co-polymer.

How expensive?

I was given a Orvis knotless leader 12ft, 7X I think ? I was surprised how well they cast, never tried frog hair, is it suitable as tippet for wet & dry fly fishing? what's it like when making join for droppers?

Zoomer,

Sight Free G3, yup, the dark-blue spools, it's pretty good!

Jonnied,

Your right, there is a market for smaller sized plastic spools!

Anyone tried Drennan Sub-Surface?

I make up my own leaders. Start with Maxima Chameleon for the tapered section and then for the business end I like to use Rio Copolymer. You can get it in either 30m or 100m spools both of which are nice and small in size. They also clip together for ease of management. Most importantly it is lovely limp stuff. If I want something a little stiffer, then Maxima Ultragreen is the kiddie.

Would you care to elaborate further?

Surely the closest the Forum has been to visiting "rocket science" for a good while.

possibly eluding to the fact that we worry about fluorocarbon whilst binning tons of household waste per year without a thought, shouldnt discard it but the packaging from marks and spencer lasagna is probibally more detrimental to the environment.

I use braided leaders with a mixture of Orvis suprerstrong and Fulling Mill copolymer for tippets.

Especially with FlyBuyer's closing down sale.

Hi Mostyn, I was fishing today using a furled leader from rod3.
I tried using Stroft as tippet material, and found it excellent.
I think Rod reccomended Stroft, and it turned over very well.
I was impressed.
