Hi to all
I am looking at making up some tapaerd leaders with mono and I was wondering what knot do you use for joining different diameters of mono.
thanks in advance

I am old - and use a blood knot

Others like the less tidy "Three Turn Water Knot".

water or surgeons knot works well, I find three turns to be very secure and tightens beautifully, lying nice and flat.

If and when I make up stepped leaders, I am a water knotter.

Default Formulas

I've given this site before and if you are going to tie your own this is a great start for you.
http://globalflyfisher.com/fishbetter/leadercalc/
I use a standard 9' 5 piece formula (this is for a 5wt):
3' butt of .50mm (you can either tie this direct onto you line using a nail knot or use a 2 turn water knot to form a loop)
1' of .40mm (I use a 3 turn blood knot to join the two sections
1' of .30mm (Again I use a 3 turn blood knot)
1' of .20mm (now I use a 4 turn blood knot but you could use a 3 turn water knot
3' tippet of .13 (I join this section with a 3 turn water knot which allows me to add a dropper. If I want a dropper higher up, then I attach say a 4x piece using a nail knot).
This formula is easy to remember, works extremely well and has stood the test of 1o years of guiding.
Now the secret of good leaders is the butt. It needs to be about 2/3 the thickness of your line tip. You may need to experiment a little with it.
Another site for you is about knots. www.netknots.com
Cheers and the the effort will be worthwhile.

Hi Jonnied17-2008
I have quite a lot of different variations to this (for instance I can extend it out to 12' by varying the individual lengths. It gets a bit tricky when you get to heavier line weights). Happy ot exchange through a PM.
But to answer your question. Originally I use Maxima and I would still prefer to use it for the 1st 3 sections. Unfortunately it is too hard to get in the UK in smaller lengths so I have switched to Orvis Super strong and the final two sections I use Frog Hair because I believe t is a superior line. I don'y use Flourocarbon, only copolymer, as I don't believe there is any signifcant benfit other than environmentally.
As I said, if you PM mew and let me know your line weights and I can let you have my formulas. I have them for 6, 5, 4 and 3 weights.
Cheers

Ive been using Daiwa Sensor clear as it has a broad range of diameters from 0.57 right through to 0.1
