Default My first wild brownie caught using my own tied fly :)

After our "extreme fishing" adventures at a local but remote reservoir a couple of weeks ago myself and TrueScot decided to head up to the main reservoir where I fish - the "Wee Dam".

As we parked up the conditions looked ideal for a few hours casting but we soon realised as we headed up the hills that the wind was starting to pick up. Still, with views like this who cares?

Shame all the UKs nukes are in this pic somewhere but a pretty picture nonetheless.

After walking for another 5 minutes or so the Wee Dam came into view. The wind was blowing from left to right so that made it ideal to fish the bank closest to us as I have always done well from there down in the corner and was hopeful that I might just catch one on my own fly today as I have not had any joy with my own flies up here.

After about half a dozen casts I felt a slight pull on the end of my line but continued with the retrieve as I thought that it may have been weeds as there are some in the area. Just as I was starting my next pull the line went tight and I lifted my rod and low and behold - I was into my first wild brownie on a fly that I tied myself. The little chap did not give up much of a fight due to his size but I wasn't caring as I was buzzing. I quickly got him into the shore, unhooked him and took a very quick snap then it was back in the water with him. I am pleased to say that he quickly swam away to fight another day.

After a couple of more casts we decided to head down to the dam that is in the first picture. As the dam was more exposed conditions were best described as blowy but even though some idiot has put pike into it years ago there are still some brownies left so we gave it half an hour here.

Both of us never got anything else but it was a day that will live with me forever as I have finally broke my duck with my own fly. I have caught an overwintered bow with my own fly at the start of the year but it was a brownie from this dam that I really wanted to catch as this is where I cut my teeth as a fly fisherman in the last couple of years.

After I dropped TrueScot off I went straight to my local tackle shop and bought some more hooks and some new tying materials and will be getting right into a few new flies at the vice.

Even thought its been several hours since I caught the fish it is still a buzz

Heres hoping my blobs work at Harelaw next month!

Thanks guys

Ted - it had a black/red seals fur body with a black cock hackle and a golden pheasant tail and the fur was secured by using copper wire.

If your up for a cast up there sometime let me know

Well done. There's nothing to compare with 'home-grown' tatties, and there's nothing to compare with 'home-tied' flies.Your fly sounds like a cross between a bibio and a Black Pennell, now that is some sort of union, isn't it?? Cheers. TC
PS But it's the man that catches the fish, not just the fly.
