Default Which river? Kelvin or the Carron

Help!
I am stuck between a rock and a hard place!

I cant decide which river to get a season ticket for, the Kelvin or the Carron.
I live out at Dullatur which is relatively close to the Carron but I work in Renfrew and pass the Kelvin on several occasions while travelling to and from work.

Any suggestions?

BTW, I will be mainly after brown trout but the opportunity to hook up with sea trout during the occasional evening session would not go a miss.

Cheers,
HB

Definitely!

At £20 for the kelvin permit which covers you for salmon and trout, it's a steal! Can't comment on the Carron though...

I have a Forum Album of stretches and catches on the Kelvin. Have a gander , it may help you decide.
If I can answer any questions you have no problems. Peter

3lb your right, I should just buy both it makes sense, but being an aberdonian I am a little bit tight when it comes to splashing the cash! Its in the blood!

To be honest tho, I have been put off of fishing the Kelvin due to the bad press it gets in terms of pollution, rubbish in and around the river and the neds that seem to gather around it. Is my perception correct? Maybe some of you guys who have been fishing the Kelvin can comment?

Are the fish from the Kelvin edible? By edible i mean can you eat them and not suffer a dose afterward!!!

Cheers,
HB

I know people who have ate them and they are fine - personally,I would not kill a Kelvin trout - too many people kill them!

never fished the kelvin but it is well talked about on here anyway ,

im a season ticket holder for the carron , It really depends what your after .
There were loads of salmon catches last year and this year... but mostly on the flying c I very seldom see someone fly fishing for them in the carron .

Sea trout, are there but iv never seen 1 being caught , but im onto them at the moment !!

brownies , stocked 4 times a year with fish at 9 inches long probably most at half a lb to 3/4lb , My biggest has been a 2lb stockie which was put in big lastyear by coincidence so its rare to get 1 that size as those fish are more expensive for them to buy .

wild brownies , loads of wild brownies at certain stretches of the river up to about half a lb again , with loads of parr and smolts mixed in .....

some fantastic stretches that are rarely fished as people are to lazy to walk far from the car these days .

Im not sure about the Kelvin but you do get the odd thing floating past , lastweek I saw everything from a pair of seals chasing sea trout i beleive right up the river to carron works 4/5 miles from the forth I see loads of minks , otter , and even 1 of those white plastic patio chairs !!! but this all in the low stretch thats tidal .

18 miles of river for 40 odd quid a year and only 20% of it is actually fished .

I personally love it .

The upper reaches of the carron (from denny upwards) are gorgeous, the wading is pretty tough though. In my opinion that is the nicest piece of water local to you.
You could always fish the top of the kelvin which must be 1/2 a mile from you? Its real mini fishing, 6 or 7ft rods and 2/3# lines are the way forward and there are plenty wee fish to keep you going.

I live in cumbernauld too and could show you quite a few wee streams like that which will cost you £0 to fish
