Default rain stops play ?????

ok this may deem like a rookie question but.....

does rain have the same effect on still water fishing as it does the rivers....

we are supposed to be taking some mates to a stillwater on saturday but the weather looks like it is gonna be wet wet wet for the next few days and slowing for saturday... we have the option to re book, getting wet i dont mind but if the fishing is gonna be carp as a result of rain i would rather not bother

The effects on rivers are very variable - the likes of the upper wharfe goes up and down like a fiddlers elbow - where lower lying longer rivers take time to resond.

I've caught fish on stillwaters in the rain - the risk is that it can be a miserable experience if your guests get wet and cold.

Standing on a still water in the rain is depressing,
Ive got wise in my old age, and i am now a fair weather Fisher,
Far more enjoyable,
i have caught fish in the rain, but i now prefer a dry back.

Depends if it's rain on a warm weather front or a cold weather front.

If it's gentle rain on a warm front with a breeze from between west and south east (I'm getting excited already ), the fishing can be anything between OK and excellent.

Heavy rain on a cold front seems to be miserable for both the anglers and the fish - I have seen plenty of comments here and elsewhere about Farmoor switching off totally on a falling barometer, for example.

ok so for arguments sakes this saturday for dorchester they have given light intervals of rain, 15 degrees celsius and a westerly wind of 15 mph (at the moment... that could change )

If it was me, I'd pack the waterproofs and go fishing with that forecast. If it was a north east gale, 8 to 10 degrees or less, frequent heavy rain showers and possible thunder, I'd stay at home.

I'm normally fair weather only but after a bad week in the office recently I needed to get out fishing. I packed the wets and went to my local stillwater.

Ended up having one of the best days so far this year. My wet gear kept me dry and warm so it didnt really bother me. Don't think i'll be putting off any future fishing trips because of the rain.

I think weather stability is often more important. A rapid change in pressure either way is likely to affect the fishing but a big drop combined with the associated rain and temperature decrease is often a killer.

If the temperature and pressure are relatively stable you'll probably be alright.

If the lake or river is rising fishing its pretty much a waste of time, but I have always caught fish immediately after a shower, its like a fish switch turned on. I got a lovely salmon last year from a small river the minute a heavy shower had ended, other anglers had packed it in and were heading to their cars and had to walk past me playing the fish. A few minutes after the river started rising and the fishing was over.
Of course you will have to get wet but the child in me loves being out in wet weather with good rain gear on.
