Default fishing the buzzer

morning chaps.i know this subject has been covered many times but here goes .im going to draycote this afternoon weather and conditions look pretty good.ive been fishing for a couple of seasons now but i cant seem to be able to fish the buzzer for love nor money.draycote is a pretty major buzzer fishery and the old boys seem to find it so easy.ive asked them watched them but i must be getting it all wrong.if i have a leader say 15ft with one fly and leave the wind to bring it round i will catch. the bottom.what im asking for really is a simple buzzer set up not too complicated as bank fishing at draycote in the wind can be tough
thanks

If you're catching the bottom try using an lightweight buzzer.

I don't know what size or type of Buzzer you are using,
Span flex and super glue buzzers have a quick sink rate,
so you could fish ones with a feather or seal fur body,
these wont sink as quick,
Or if you are fishing a size 10 you could try a 12 or 14.

Use 6-8lbs bs line mno or fluorocarbon..... 15ft??... tie a dropper say, 8ft from the point... 4 or 5ft if the water is murky... Use a 2 turn water knot tying the dropper directly to the main leader .. around 8 inch...

Use something like this heavier pattern on the point: Black thread...Black Nickel hooks... Sparton clear rib (not important).. crisp packet cheeks n varnished..

Click the image to open in full size.

And something similar to this on the dropper: Black thread... Sparton rib 'again'.... glo-brite 7 floss cheeks... varnish the lot .. a couple of times... hooks available from 'me'.... £3.50 per 100 + £1 p+p

Click the image to open in full size.

Degrease the leader... cast out (over reasonable deepish water) give the line a couple of pulls to straighten the leader... now just leave it and count down to say... 5 seconds ... watch the end of the flyline... fish will take on-the-drop... Have your rod tip around 3ft off the surface and at a slight angle... and start a very slow fig 8 retrieve.. fan cast all around you say from 10 o clock to 2 o clock... if nothing happens... do the same and count to 10..... and so on ... No need to change flies maybe perhaps the retrieve... speed it up... even 'pull' em!!!... if nothing happens... move!! If you see the odd fish moving, you could put either a dry fly on the point or a small booby to keep the buzzer up in the water... regarding buzzer types, I have had success by using a pattern of just black thread... nothing else tied carrot shape... Best of luck!

It's always important to have your fly/flies fishing at the right depth.

The Right Depth is the one that the fish are feeding at.

I would start (if it is cool and early in the day) with a two fly rig as described above and allow it to fish through quite deep.

Then use the same rig and figure of 8 the flies back a little quicker to keep them higher in the water

Then replace the point fly with a lighter "non superglue" type buzzer

Finally, replace the point fly with a black cormorant booby.

(if it is warm and overcast, or there are fish swirling on the surface, then start with the booby rig and work backwards)

Obviously - when you start getting takes or catching fish; you have found the Right Depth.

Your line and rod weight should be a number 7 or less (an eight weight is not so good for fishing smallish flies static or slowly retrieved; there is often too much resistance to the taking fish - causing them to spit out the fly)

Effective leader material is 6lb Sightfree G3 flourocarbon (sinks quite well) or 5 or 6lb rio powerflex copolymer (sinks a little slower but is more supple). These leaders are another reason that 8 weight rods are a little too beefy.

Just ask the "old boys" how they fish. Fishing is a lot to do with confidence, just persevere until you catch, then your confidence start to come.

As Lone Watie said in "The Outlaw Josey Wales" endeavour to persevere.

Thanks for that write up, helps me a lot as well! Are we talking about using a floating line here? I've read alot about midge tip lines, could a decent trade off be found with a polyleader?

No need for Midge tip or poly leader.... .... just a floater... Also, a wf 8 will be fine!!!.. keep it simple guys!!.. dont fall into the age-old trap of special gear!!... not so long ago (not me) people were catching loads on silk lines!!.. Best fly in the box is the one in your head!!.... use your noggin and think what you are doing... or in most cases... what you are 'not' doing... All part of the term 'watercraft'... relax!
