Default Would you offer a bed for the night to a fellow fly fisher?

One of the lesser–known successes of the internet has been the ‘Couchsurfing’ phenomenon, where a million - predominantly young - people have registered to offer a free ‘bed’ for the night to others who have registered on the www.couchsurfing.com site. A bed is more likely to be a sofa/couch, but the idea of entertaining a comparative stranger, with the thought that such hospitality might be reciprocated, seems to be appealing and working well. Of course, a very big plus is that it also saves on accommodation costs.

This got me thinking; I’m no kid, but my wife and I have got a big house with a couple of spare rooms. Were someone on this forum to PM me asking if I’d put them up for a night for free, so they could fish around where I live I’d certainly consider it, especially if I thought that at some future time someone might be able offer me a bed elsewhere where I’d like to fish. As flyfishers, of course, we have something very much in common, so interacting shouldn’t be awkward.

Over the years my wife and I have taken in lodgers from time to time (exchange students, actors) so we’re temperamentally comfortable with having a relative stranger around. But is entertaining someone in your home for a night or two, who shares your passion for fishing something that you’d entertain?

As long as I could go fishing with them I can't see why not.

Does Angelina Jolie fish? I'd even let her see my rod.

If Loopy's avatar knocked on my door asking for a bed, I might move the wife into the spare room for the night......

Only joking, as I have said the little lady before; I would only cheat on her if the other woman was better looking. However, as no one is better looking than my wife, that aint ever going to happen

Jokes aside, I dont think I would have an issue with someone kipping over so long as we got to fishing the next day.

They may even get a bite to eat out of Mrs SKB's kitchen of culinary delights.......

I think its a great idea.

There isnt enough of this going on. I was flying to Dunedin from Christchurch a few years ago, sat next to an old couple from Gore. They invited me to stay with them anytime i wanted, giving me (a complete stranger) their home number and address!

I think that we are very suspicious of strangers here in the UK, its a shame.

A great idea. Reminds me, through my teens I used to hitch hike all over the place, often with a group of friends when we would have cheap holidays hitching from one youth hostel to another, later when I was at college in London I would hitch to and from home in the midlands. It was no big deal back then, but nowadays I would be paranoid if my kids did it. Likewise I'm embarassed to admit I've never really returned the favour - partly because far fewer people hitch, partly because those that do stand in stupid places where its impossible to stop and partly (mainly?) because I've probably become conditioned like the rest of society to thinking that all strangers are potential mad axe murderers or kiddy fiddlers. Sad really. But this idea sounds great, at least for fellow anglers, although I think I'd still want to know a bit about the person first.
