Default Leader Materials

I understand (and practice) the principles of tapering down in diameter to create a leader, but assuming that the diameters, breaking strain etc was suitable, does it make any difference if you mix mono, flourocarbon and copolymer materials in the same leader. I was thinking about knot strengths or different stiffnesses of materials affecting turnover.

I mainly fish in medium rivers for seatrout and salmon using 7/8 lines and 9' leaders.

Looking forward to your insights.

I would assume using the same leader material in different strains would be better as they would all be the same suppleness/stiffness, so giving your leader a better curve and turn over.

I fish a straight through leader or a manufactured tapered leader. I can't be bothered with doing it myself.

Ditto for me....the principle is fine but life is too short.

Also every knot on your taper is one more weakspot. Many knots weaken the breaking strain by 50%. IMHO its likely to cause tangles as you have more knots to snag while turning over.

For single flies I like tapered leaders and will often add a straight length for a dropper. That said I am usually too tight to have a decent supply so its only when I push the boat out and treat myself

Well www.flybuyer.co.uk have a closing down sale on so you might get something cheap there if you hurry .
