Default Couple of questions on the basics..

Right this is going to seem really stupid but here goes nothing.

1) Casting no problem i have managed to get this nailed so far anyway. But once cast do you let the line lay in the water and wait or reel in / strip?

2) With the line out do you strip the line through your fingers or reel in using a reel?

3) if stripping and get a good take on the line do you bring the fish to net using you fingers to strip or do you rell in the spare lie and do it that way.

Sorry for basic questions but still learning.

Hi hearme

First off once youve cast and the lines hit the water, the course of action depends on what fly or flies you are using.Let say you where using a weighted PTN, you would let the fly sink a few feet then start your retrieve, then next cast allow the fly a few more seconds to sink and so forth, with a dry you will probley leave it static or give a couple of twitches , some flies like motannas need to have a couple of good pulls to get them to start sinking as they hold air around them.
Stripping line is normally done with "if right handed" with your right hand around the handle and your index finger looped around the fly line, you will strip back the line with your left hand , using the right index finger to hold the line while your left goes back up to grasp another pull.
I think most of us use the line stripped through the rod and not on the reel, to be honest its alot easier, when youve got a load of line at your feet.
I hope this is helpful. Good luck mate Gaz "dont be afraid to ask question"

Hi Hearme,
both Jim and snaggit I agree with 100%.If new to this, mabye you could have a day with one of the members in your area, alternatively, watch other fishermen on your next trip.Watch the foliage around your feet as you retrieve so not to spoil next cast by coiling around reeds, grass, stones, dead tramps etc..
Large long coils on the ground will help to shoot line easier, most important, never be afraid to ask, here or on a water.
tightlines,
Ken

Thanks guys thigs make a little more sense now.
Actually got to go fishing today for first time in a few weeks spent an hour practicing castig in a field this moring, and on the water this afternoon.
Using montana lfies and when i was casting away i noticed a small right just above the cork so i retied and thread the line through here. Is this normal as it was almost impossable to cast with the line through here.

So i then took the line out of there and continued to cast with the line going straight from the reel through the eyes on the rod itself.
Managed to hook 3 browns and brought 2 to net both small less than a pound but felt bloody great.
All returned unharmed.

thanks again..

ps

could anyoe recomend a book on the basics of flyfishing?

what i think you are describing is the hookkeeper. where you park your fly when your not using it.this is not,NOT.TO BE USED TO PASS YOUR FLYLINE THROUGH.

I'd go get your short term memory loss sorted. It's only been a month and you have gone from teaching people to not knowing the basics.
