Default Loch Tay

As some of you may know I only started fly fishing last month and I am going to Loch Tay on Thursday for a bit of bait fishing with a few mates (they can't fly fish - yet!!!) but I am going to take my fly rod with me and have a try - only fished my local river (Devon) with the fly and caught 2 small broonies with Snipe & Purple. And 1 small broonie with an unknown fly I have (don't know most of the names yet!!

Can anyone give me some advice on what flies I should use and what method?

I fished Loch Tay quite a bit as a youngster and Greenwells variants always did best for me, Greenwells Spiders being particularly good and a local variant which was a semi-dry fly with a Greenwells body and two wings angled back slightly. There was another loch near Ben Lawers, Lochan Na Laraig I think it was called which I remember being full of feisty little fish that were eager to take a fly, well worth a go.

It's nice to see a fellow jambo !

If it was me who was going fishing then i would be trying flies like: Golden Olive Bumbles, Claret Bumbles, Clan Chief, Bibio, Kate Mclaren, Soldier Palmer, Invicta, Dunkeld, Dabblers in various colours, and the old faithful - Loch Ordie. I would also take along some diawl bachs - the trout up here seem to be fond of them and some hares ears with and without the gold bead.

A standard three fly set up (for me) would be to have a bushy fly - like the Golden Olive Bumble on the top dropper, a clan chief on the middle and a silver invicta on the point.

For a two fly setup a bushy fly on the top and then another bushy fly in a wave or (usually) a slimmer fly on the point - connemara black perhaps ?

If you need help with the flies i.d then send me a PM and i'll help you out,

cheers,

AP

The wild ones love orange at this time of year.
Try a Kate McLaren with a long orange marabu tail on the top dropper, a slim Hars Ear with holo gold rib on the middle and a Doobry Snatcher or Orange Sweeny Todd on the point.
As above a Bibio also will do well in the top or middle positions. Some also swear by a Soldier Palmer at this time of year.
You could always use what you normally catch with, it will probably out perform all the advice.
