Default Derbyshire Wye

Several times a season on the Wye.

Best wild rainbow I have landed this year topped nine pounds. Clients have hooked these beasts to double figures. The fly line is gone in seconds and you're well pleased to have the backing there.

Try buzzer fishing at range on the likes of Rutland and Grafham in May and you will certainly see your backing several times a session!

Probably everytime I go fishing these days, These Coho, Kings, Chums etc - just love to run and run.

All my reels are now loaded with 40lb braid (tough line) anything less will just snap like dental floss.......................

If you fish in a 'Hook and Hold' style you will never see the backing unless you are cleaning or changing the line. However, it is there to fill the reel and reduce memory, is it not?

When I started out I was often seeing backing out, and then usually lost the fish. Applying match pole fishing principals confirmed that if you let a fish run it is more of a problem to stop it! Also if a fish turns towards you it is much easier for it to create slack and throw the hook: so hook and hold, take and never give line. I have only had one rod broken by a fish of about 4lbs: bigger fish are usually easier.

If you're being chased by a police dog, try not to go through a tunnel, then on to a little seesaw, then jump through a hoop of fire. They're trained for that **** !

On fish, twice since 1990. Once in my early days on an 8.5lb rainbow and once last year on a 7lb 3oz chub in a pacey stretch of river. That was on a 7' 3wt though, so it was interesting.
