Smile Question on Polarized Sunglasses

I was curious as to your thoughts on the colours of sunglasses lenses for spotting rises and "nervous water" while fishing stillwaters.

I fished with a boat partner last summer, who had an uncanny ability to spot rising trout amongst the broken surface. He attributed a large part of his success, at spotting fish, to the colour of his polarized sunglasses...

Care to share which colour you prefer and why, as well as any thoughts or recommendations on brand names?

Cheers,
bcflyfisher

I've used Bolle Polarised sandstone and they are superb, but they scrape really easily and i've gone through quite a few pairs, so i'm looking at cheaper options, unless booby basher can do me a good deal on one.

Hey BC,

I've bought Action Optics in Copper which were very good, Costa Del Mar 580 in Green Mirror which are very good though a little dark like the Action Optics (now Smiths). I have some Maui Jims (Kaanapali) and these aren't as good as the first two (IMHO) though extremely light. I recently bought some Haber Vision in Copper/Rose to compare and I find them very good so far, with a lot higher light transmission than any of the others (photochromatic). They are a new internet based company by the founder of Bolle and can be purchased relatively cheaply.

Cheers,

I also like the Bollé sandstone lenses but agree with rrw35 that they do mark too easily for the not inconsiderable cost.

I have a pair of Serengeti glasses with similar coloured lenses but made of glass which are much more durable. They are normally much more expensive but will last very much longer, however I got mine from eBay when the seller was convinced they were Bollé and I paid £50 for £200 glasses!

I am very tempted to try the HaberVison glasses as a backup for about $85.

sewinbasher,

Though you may buy the Habers as backup, you may find that they are promoted to your mainstays! The cheap price is not a reflection of their quality, they compare favourably with the name brands I mention. The frames are actually European made as opposed to Far East in the named brands like CDMs!

Cheers,

ps it will cost the same number of £ as $ when all shipping and duty/vat is paid, but it is cheaper than the cost either local or imported of Smith, CDM, MJ, etc

Thumbs up

Thanks for the quick response and for the superb answers to my questions!!!

The main purpose is to spot surface disturbances, so is sandstone the best colour for spotting nervous water in mid-day lighting conditions? I was told that rose is a great colour and have seen some anglers using yellow as well ( I normally use amber).

I assume that there is no single colour that will work for every condition and light-level, but I am searching for the best choice for mid-day fishing with a breezy conditions for loch-style fishing.

Thanks again for all the excellent responses and stellar advice!

Cheers,
bcflyfisher

Yes mate without a doubt sandstone lenses are what you re looking for I am using two pairs just now that are proto types for new glasses next year ..
Also common sense with the glasses ie keep them in there case as they will always flip onto your lenses .
Give the Warrant frames a look mate you can buy different lenses for them at a fraction of the cost and have a few sets of lenses for different light conditions .
Best wishes JIM CRAWFORD ..
