I am about to fit a Roman Moser Minicon braded loop to my line (Cortland 444). I have never done this before...

Can I clarify that you are suggesting that I can simply:
. insert the flyline into the opening of the braided tube
. slide the rubber sleeve to overlap the braided tube and the flyline
and that's that; no glue whatsoever?

Thanks
Andrew

SORRY,but do not use the plastic sleeve(or whatever it's made of)
insert about 2" of braid onto the flyline, making sure the flyline is butted up to the point where the braid is doubled.then whip the loose end of the braid with flytying thread.smooth joint ,never ever give you a problem when you have to pull the join through the top ring.
IMHO.this has never let me down, and i would recommend it to everybody, for trout .seatrout .salmon.

I wonder if we are dealing with different animals? Moser Minicon loops are only about an inch-and-a-quarter long - the flyline seems to slide about one inch into them (maybe as you say this is where braid is doubled - don't understand how they are constructed). One of the main Minicon features is the red rubber sleeve (bite indicator) so whilst I repect what you are advising, I don't want to discard this - I could have bought a cheaper brand if I didn't want the indicator.

If you don't like the idea of just a glued connection thread the leader through the hole leaving enough of the butt to make a nail knot, nail knot the butt end around the fly line and cover with glue until the knot is smooth. It slides through the tip ring easily and the tapered leader/flyline will snap before the knot fails.

HI Andrew - I have used the system you talk about - the method referred to in most of this post is different. For the roman moser minicon, (or cheaper varieties from other manufacturers) the plastic sleeve is essential. Or I guess you could use thread in place of the sleeve, but it would be less slick - not that it probably matters on 1 inch of braid. But you do need to keep tension on the braid somehow.

Have to say this is what I now do, having had failures using the Dave Whitlock method (and I did use Angler's Glue/Zap-a-Gap).

On lighter lines - say AFTM 6 and below, you might be advised to cut off the thickest portion of the tapered leader to avoid bulkiness.

Just tried this and it works great. Damned if I can get the needle into a 7 wt clear intermediate though!

I managed to use this needle method just the once on a 5 weight line. I worked an absolute treat, the only problem came when I had to do it again as the tapered leader needed replacing- somehow could not get the needle to go in far enough
