Default Help, I've Got Mullet

Thousands of the blighters!
A couple of south coast rivers I fish get huge numbers of mullet up them from spring to autumn. Not in the tidal water but right up into freshwater, over 5 miles above the tide in one river. They appear to do nothing but graze algae off the bottom. How do I catch them on fly?????
I have hooked one or two on very sparse hares ears, collie dogs, tiny silver bodied lures and big tube flies and foul hooked a few by accident. Of those hooked in the mouth only one has stayed attached thus proving the old adage that a fool and his mullet are easily parted...
They are also totally unspookable, they come right in under your feet and you can poke them with the rod top but they just ignore it or push off a yard or so and carry on as if nothing had happened.

Help!

Cheers.

Andy

I have heard of people throwing out bread flake to encourage them to feed before throwing in a 'bread fly' (I am sure I have seen these on eBay and even on here, somewhere)

Best of luck and please let us know how you get on........

Default mullet

I fish for them in lanzarote and do well, break up a piece of bread or roll and throw it in amongst them ,let them start to feed ,i tried the bread fly made of white deer hair but only caught a couple ,the best way was to sqeeze a small bit of roll or bread on a kamasan b100 size 16 dont squeeze it too much or it sinks ,you will have to experiment, cast gently and smoothly and it works a treat, let me know how you get on

as rookstorm says use bread to get them feeding then use a white eggfly. just be warned though mullet are some of the most cautious fish in british waters and can/will have you pulling your hair out! when hooked hold on tight as pound for pound they are also one of the best fighting fish around

I have been trying to catch a Mullet since I first met them in Luce bay in 1967.

So far with no success - the buggers will swim right up beside you - standing waist deep in the sea - and still take nothing you offer.

Next on the list to try is this Bread-Fly lark.

We get a lot here in North Devon and I've seen a number of locals fishing for them with mixed success, but I've not tried as yet. I may well give it a try with a fly rod this year....

I've read reports in French magazines of people catching them on a bread fly made with a piece of yellow sponge. Never tried it but at least it's an easy fly to tie!

This guy seems to know his stuff:

The link to the mullet forum at the bottom seems to be broken.

Found these too:

Which look the puppies if the mullet are only grazing.

Knowing you Andy i would of thought that bait was a no no.

Shrimp patterns might be the way forward or do as us mortals do and use mashed bread and a bread fly
