Default Salmon rod/fishing

Salmon rods are usually 11ft and above.I have a 9.5ft rod designed for trout fishing and don't really want to have to buy another rod just for salmon.Realistically can I use my trout rod to fish for salmon?

This post comes up often, maybe you should do a search,
its very easy, big rods for big rivers small rods for wee rivers,
Also it depends on the size of the fish you may encounter,
You don't want to hook a 20 lbs plus on a 9 foot rod,
Don't get me wrong its easy done but takes a lot longer to play the Fish,
And if you plan to release it, then you want it in as quick as you can.
I have fished the Nith a medium size river and had salmon up to 8lbs on a 9ft.6 rod,
But not recommended in the back end when the bigger fish move in.
The River cairn a tributary of the Nith is a small river, and i regular fished with a 9ft.6
And again had Salmon up to eight pounds and the rod handled them no problem,
In fact this is the most satisfying way to take salmon fantastic sport,
And if you are lucky to catch a fresh run grilse on a single handed rod,
Then look out for fireworks.

Thanks for the info. Joe.I'll just stick to the 9.5ft rod then and make sure I have plenty of backing on the reel.Have never caught a salmon so hoping to land one this season.

When fishing a small river its very rare to go into backing,
Most Fish stick to mid stream and you just let the current tire them,
I think about 20ft of line would be the most i had out.
