Default boat and bank fishing - 9'6" or 10'

I prefer a 9'6" #7 rod for bank fishing but is a 10' rod a necessity for boat fishing to allow allow use of longer leaders etc or is 9'6" quite adequate. In essence, if you had a choice of one of two rods in these lengths which would you go for and why?

I just stick to my 10' for bank and boat, I have 9'6'' a 9' 7#'ts but just feel comfortable with the 10'. I also use a 10'-7# rod for Sea trout and a 10'-8# for single handed Salmon.

Thanks Jim. I have a 10'#7 Bloke rod but find it tiring to use all day from the bank. It is said to be a good boat rod for sunk line work though. I was going to buy the 9'4" #7/8 Bloke for reservoir bank fishing but have a chance of keeping a 10' or 9'6" Hardy Demon. Just wondered of the two which I should keep. ie Bloke 10'#7 for boat and 9'6" #7 Demon for bank or 9'4" #7/8 Bloke for bank and the 10'#7 Demon for boat.

Yes, I have a 10' Greys Plati X #7 and it is a lovely rod. I have used it twice, both times from the boat and once from the bank. Only once was my hand and fingers knackered and that was after using it all day; from 8am to 5pm.

Other times, after 6hrs or so I am still fine.

That said, I would happily use it from the bank though I also have a 9'6" #7 Greyflex MKII that I recently began using after retiring the MK1 which I used from both bank and Boat.

I think, and feel, that the 10' rod does give you greater scope for using more flies and ease of use around a boat to lift flies out and begin casting again - remember; you are sitting down and dont have the height you would if standing so the greater length of teh rod, I feel , makes it slightly easier.

However, I also have a 9' #8 that I am happy to use from the boat too for sunk line work with two flies and that is ok too to flick about without too much trouble.

Up to you, really, to use what is comfortable for you.

Thanks Ben and Jim for the advice. With regards to the Demon the 9'6" feels faster and stiffer than the 10'. I prefer the action on the 10' but that would leave me with three 10' #7 rods (Bloke, Scott and Demon) and I don't think I can justify that. Think I'll put both Demons on Ebay tonight and buy the Bloke 9'4" #7/8 for bank fishing.

Thanks again for the advice

I use a 9'6" for both.

Mostly because I don't do enough boat fishing to warrant another rod and make do without too many problems.

Nah, dont buy the Bloke - I'll swap you my Beulah 9' #8 for your Demon

save yourself the eBay hassle and the PayPal fees..........

Sorry Sunkistbob, thanks for the offer but the decision has been made and 9'6" Demon going on Ebay tonight. Last chance to pick up a bargain rod at a bargain price before the Ebay hawks get their mitts on it (see classifieds). The Demon is a superb rod and if finances permitted I'd be keeping them both.
