Default Newzealand Flatworms

Have any of you chaps got any earthworms left? Here's a copy of my email to the Scotish expert Dr Brian Boag and his response.

Dear Dr Boag
Some years ago (about 8 I think) I reported finding some NZ Flatworms in my garden. However now I find neither myself or any of my neighbours have any earthworms that we can find.Is it worth buying some earthworms to repopulate my garden or would I just be feeding the flatworms.

Dear Garry
Thank you for your observations on the repercussions of a New Zealand flatworm infestation. My experience is that there maybe a 5-7 year cycle in the population on earthworms and flatworms in some areas. The flatworms eat out most earthworms and then starve themselves and then the remaining earthworms recover. However not all earthworm species recover to the same extent and the larger ones which come to the surface of the soil are worst affected. If in your situation the earthworms have all been eradicated and this has lead to all your flatworms also dying out then it would be worth repopulating with earthworms. However I would check for the presence of flatworms for a few weeks before going ahead since any flatworms that are left will, if fed just multiply and you will have wasted your time.
Hope this helps.
Regards
Brian Boag

It would be interesting to know who else is affected.
Cheers
