Default Fishing Tackle Insurance

Home Insurance is up for renewal and has raised the question of whether my salmon and trout fishing tackle is adequately covered by the home insurance policy, especially when I am out using it.

What do others on here do? Do you have a separate policy for your fishing tackle? Or do you just "hope" that it's all covered on the Contents listing of your home insurance policy?

I'd be interested to hear if you've made some savings my having a separate policy for you fishing tackle, as opposed to lumping it onto the home insurance, and also, which company you used for that separate policy.

Cheers.

MB - I hope it is covered even though it is all locked in the garden shed (and, no, you cant have my address)

I believe it would cost too much to have it listed as seperate items even though it would cost me £1000's to replace as I also have deep sea and a bit of coarse gear in there.

Please keep us posted on which direction you take.

Ben

My insurance people have assured me that tackle is covered both in and out of the home and also for accidental breakage in use. That last point is very relevant..pal of mine bust his rod while using it and Zurich Insurance refused to pay out as it was being used at the time!!!!!

However, I still specify Fishing Tackle with a value as a specific item and pay the extra.

Interestingly, I had a Simms jacket stolen and they settled up, on the phone immediately by transfer into my Bank Account.

Happy to give them a plug..if you are over fifty. SAGA.

Oh great!

finally, a half decent insurance company gets a plug on here but, unfortunately, it's SAGA - there's a bit of reverse ageism against those of us under 35!!

Had some older spinning rods/reels etc stolen out of garden shed a few years ago and they were covered by my home insurance policy with Direct Line. When I made my claim was supplied with new gear from a company that they deal with but can't remember their name. Received rods, reels, line, floats, hooks etc without any hassle. Suppose would depend on the value of the claim if the worst happens.

I'm with Direct Line at the moment, and they will only deal with Bennetts of Sheffield, which is why I want to move insurers.

Default insurance

Hiya,

I worked in home insurance new business and claims department for many years, your fishing gear should be covered through the contents section of you insurance policy even when it is in a shed, this sounds obvious but as long as it was locked and there are signs of forced or violent entry, as for when you have them that will depand on if you have "contents away from the home" cover and if you do please make sure the single item amount is enough to cover the item that will cost most to replace and also that the over all amount of cover away from the home is enough, ie, if the total cost of items that you would normally take out on a trip is £500, £1000 or £1500, this is the amount of cover away from the home you should have, you should always phone your insurer or have a good read through your policy booklet and especially the exclusions, again this sounds like common sense but you would be surprised by the amount of people that take out insurance cover and have no idea if something is covered or for how much.

I personally would not take out specialized insurance cause if you do it correct your home insurance will cover the lot and for less money normally.

Hope this helps mate.

Kevin

I have an agreed sum of 5K set aside in my home insurance to cover me against loss, theft, alien abduction etc, whether at home or away for all my sporting goods (fishing gear and shotguns). Surprisingly it didn't cost me that much..................birdsnest

I had all my fishing tackle stolen when someone stole my car in December.
I was insured with Direct Line home cover they had no problem replacing everything I lost ,they put me in touch with a company called angling direct who were great to deal with (I even got 50p for every fly that was lost).
Its a shame that Direct Line car cover was rubbish in comparison.
All in all Direct Line Home cover worked for me.
Cheers

I had exactly the same with Zurich. I was boat fishing a static nymph at Carsington, put my rod down for a moment (...you can guess what's coming next...), only to watch it disappear over the side. Favourite rod, line, reel. My mate and I still laugh about it, as we spent the next 30 mins casting sinking lines trying to dredge it up. Yeah right - fat chance.

Anyway rang Zurich and was totally pi55ed off at their attitude ( call centre staff who treated the whole thing as a joke) and they refused to pay out as it was "in normal use". Normal use 30 foot down at the bottom of a reservoir? huh?
Apparently if I had trod on it then I could have reclaimed all the costs. Anyway, changed my insurer immediately and, touch wood, have never had cause to claim since.
I suspect they are all the same though.
