Question Low Stretch Lines.

There is some discussion in the tackle section over Airflo's new floaters. It seems to be generally accepted that their sinkers are very good, but their floaters not so. It appears they have finally made a floater that some, at least, think to be good. Whether good or bad, their sinkers and floaters share a non, or low, stretch core. Regardless of whether the floater is any good or not, is there really an advantage in a non stretch fly line. I know that I would never lift a spinning rod without braid on the reel, but I am not so sure about fly rods.

When I have used Airflo sinkers in the past I seem to loose a lot more fish. Perhaps I am feeling and hitting more bites because of the low stretch, but if I am hooking twice as many and loosing more than half, then I am back were I started. (Still trying to get my head round the maths in that last sentence).

Anyone any thoughts?

Personally I find I bump a lot of fish off on the sixth sense lines and prefer the normal stretch lines. However a lot of people swear by the non stretch ones so I think it's a matter of try them and make your own mind up.

I think that a lot of the fish that are 'bumped' on the Sixth Sense lines, you wouldn't even know about when fishing a normal, stretchy line.

What exactly do you mean when you say 'bumped' ? Are you getting light knocks lifting/striking but not actually hooking up or are you actually hooking a fish and loosing it?

When I'm fishing sinking lines and I get the odd knock I just keep retrieving until the line locks up and I get a bend in my rod, I think they call it strip striking but I may be wrong.

I have found that on the deeper lines I do not have this problem but on the slow intermediate and midge tip SS, I definitely found I had breakages and lost fish. I have reverted to normal lines for these depths.

Regarding the floater I would not use the SS for straightlining for fear of the same issues, but I think it may be a benifit for bung fishing, especially at long range where a lot of slack has to be picked up.

Default Non Stretch - The way forward ?

Personally I love them........Sixth Sense Low Stretch lines - I mean !

They cast well, and you can even feel your fly coming through weed or along the bottom..

Yes you will bump the odd fish, but I really don't think you'd even feel these takes on a traditional line.

Get a 6th Sense line and a Traditional line...lay them both out, blindfold yourself and get a mate just to apply gentle resistance...you'll feel it on the 6th sense but not on the Traditional...you'll be amazed at the difference !

Obviously if you only cast half a line or less then the benifit is not as great....so their benifit is questionable(as the take won't be absorbed so much over a shorter distance)....but when at distance or fishing really deep they come into their own.

I wouldn't be without them, and am convinced they've made a difference to my fishing.

And because of the benifits of low stretch I even like the Airflo Floater and Mini Tip.....although you must really look after them and apply floatent if you want them to remain floating.....But according to many of you the new Ultra Supple version is much better !

I personally think we as fly fishermen don't embrace progression like other sectors of the angling market (ie Carp Boys who love every new gadget etc) braid has had a major impact on all other forms of fishing....i think it will/has on fly fishing...and that we should accept it more readily

Rob,

Shouldn't you be pumping iron in the gym to compete with team Woodford?
