Default Q about "Matching the Hatch" by Pat O'Reilly

I'm considering putting "Matching the Hatch" on a birthday list.

I've had a flick through some reviews and the pages available on Amazon but can't tell whether it covers things like how naturals move and therfore how the respective recommended imitations should be fished.

Has anyone read it and if so does it cover this sort of thing?

This book is perhaps rather more river than stillwater focussed. It does contain suggested patterns and how to fish them. You may find his concept of the "magnificent 7" flies interesting...

I quite like the book and find it useful, but some expert river anglers on this site think it's a bit one dimensional. Says more about me than about them, perhaps .

I have Pat O'reilly's book, Matching the Hatch! I like it very much!!

I also, recently bought a copy of : John Goddards, Waterside Guide; and although it's very good! - I prefer reading and browsing through, Matching the Hatch. I would recommend it to all!!

It's a great reference for someone starting out, as well as folk like myself who have plenty of experience but never really got into the entymological side of things.

There are some tips on how to tie and fish the flies he recommends, but generally it focusses on the art of identifying various forms of trout food.

I enjoyed the light-hearted style of the book. Very well written and easy to digest.

Does anyone have either of these books they might have lying around they prefer to part with?

If so, please send me a PM ...

If you want to get to the point where you are confident that the fly you are fishing is a suitable 'approximate' representation of the natural then it is a very useful resource.

If you are a budding angler / entomologist then it is perhaps a bit too broad brush.

I think it is jolly useful.

I have it. I thought it was/is a brilliant read. It is pretty much focused on river fishing though. But its great! Basically saying that if you had to you could fish with seven flies. In various sizes.

Very good book. Would defo recomend it

Great, very helpful book which is quite inexpensive. You won't regret it.

Cracking book. Bought for me as a Christmas present a couple of years back. I was distraught when thought I'd lost it, left it on a train or something, wife found it at the back of a bookshelf & I was overjoyed.

For me, I find it simplifies things nicely. Well worth the ££££s, especially for The Magnificent Seven. Mainly focussed on rivers, little bit on still waters. Another recommendation would be [URL="
Amazon Amazon
which covers still water more thoroughly, as well as running.
