I have been watching with interest The Float-tube V Kayak thread on the Stillwater updates section. Duff raised a point regarding bacterial / parasite contamination from Kayaks / Float tubes.
I am interested in this as I have heard mixed opinions regards the effectiveness of net dipping - From fishery managers.
Most places I fish it is standard practice to net dip I always 'dip out' i.e. to stop the car minging of rotten trout I dip the net thoroughly on exit as the disinfectant smells moderately better than aformentioned rotten fish.
So net is always nice and disinfected prior to fishing but what about footwear, fly lines, waterproofs, drogues and basically anything else which could harbour contaminants? All of the items mentioned have the potential to cross contaminate (I would have thought). I have also been told that migratory waterfowl pose a vastly greater threat of contaminating the water than any of my gear? Is this correct?
Is net dipping purely lip service to cross contamination or is it an essential task? If so shouldnt everything carried / worn by the regular angler be disinfected?
Advice Please.
