Default Fly Line Construction

Afternoon all,
It's the most basic of questions as i'm new to flyfishing. I have been given some top quality backing , floating and leader line ( I apparently have everything I need to construct a line ) but I havent a clue how to do it. I know the backing goes on first but dont know how to attach that to the fly line and the end is a complete mystery !!!!!
Are there any online sites that can step by step show you how to put it all together ? If not i'd be greatful for all the help I can get.
It's to go on a 9' 6'' rod for a lake offering trout upto 5 lbs.
Cheers
Saxby

Welcome to the Forum!

There are a number of ways of doing this. On of the more common methods is to fix a braided loop (often come with lines or can be bought from a shop) onto the end of the fly line by threading the fly line inside the braided line.. A small rubber stopper is then super-glued over the braided line to securely fix this onto the fly line.

Then, you tie the backing onto the braided loop and, hey presto, fly line and backing are connected together.

See here also as I sometimes do similar...

and another that shows you a bunch of other knots....

best of luck and welcome to the greatest sport in the world

Thumbs up fly line construction

Ta very much for this. It's just what I was looking for. My son is 10 1/2 and he's really the new fly fisherman and loving it.
We've had nothing but help from everyone so far. The gilly and ' old boys ' at Salford lakes have been brilliant with teaching him basic stuff.
I'll have a go at the reels tonight.
Cheers

Hi Saxby and welcome, try the search function on here, type in fastening backing to fly line etc, and leaders, loads of useful stuff should come up.

Default Given the rig (an assumption on my part) will be for trout fishing...

A very simple way of connecting the end of a fly line to backing is just a 'needle knot. Don't try to put it on at the very end of the fly line (1-2 inches up), snug tight and his should do the job. This also a very good way of attaching your leader to the front of the fly line.

Here's another great 'how to' on the most common knots used in fishing:

And welcome to the Board!!

I you are ever Essex way then please feel free to drop me a line and join me at Chigboro which is a brilliant establishment for an enjoyable day out. The banks are very manicured and hence ideal for easy casting.

There is also a 'baby' lake which is full of smaller but easier to catch trout and with deep water right at your feet, you dont have to cast far to catch them.

Just PM me if you fancy trying it out.

Ben

Essex not Kent not as far over.

A few nice spots in Kent mind you and next over is Surrey where I lived for many a happy year before a charming Essex girl lured me across the river and marched up the aisle twisting my rubber arm as she went
