Default Line lengths

Over on my local lake last week there was a discussion going on about the longest WF fly line, I didn't enter into it at that time but I will do next time I am over there, I decided before I open my big mouth I would measure my Cortland WF#7, I had a feeling in my water, that I'd heard in the past that the Cortland is the longest, I have done just that, my Cortland is 35 yds long, and as near as I can be sure, the belly is 15 yds before the running line starts, I haven't heard of longer, if anyone out there has I would be greatful for any info',
Hans, will probably know

Since most fly fishers struggle to get over 25 yds I don't see the point of having super long lines. Am I missing something...........birdsnest

I use a LureFlash Viper line which I believe is 27 m, and have never managed to get to the backing on a cast (wimp I hear you all shout) however I understand that 25-30 is the most that most anglers can do anyway!!(Cromie excepted!!)
Cheers

I imagine the longest line would be the Airflo 40+ at 41 yards. However, my adimitedly limited experience with the floating lines in the range leads me to avoid them as I personally find them clumsy with a tendency to splash down like a ton of bricks. The sinking lines are fine though.

Another 35 yard line (same as Cortland) is the S A Expert distance. I've only used this line in a six weight so far but when my 7 weight Cortland 444SL eventually cracks up I'll replace it with with a SA. Cortlands new version of their rocket taper is different to their old taper and adds too much weight up front for my liking. The expert distance has a long belly and a very long rear taper which is great for line control when loch styling. You get as much control as you would from a DT line if you're short lining and the shootability of a WF if you want to long line. Top stuff.

I think you have missed the point, the discussion was not about casting 35 yds, it was simply about the length of WF fly lines, "Which WF fly line is the longest??", since posting this I have found out from a Cortland dealer, Cortland at 35 yds is the longest line made, thank you all for your interest. He gave the reason that some casters can put out a full 35 yds and they don't like to feel the backing in their hand, I uderstand Charles Jardine is one of them!! Not me!!!!, not for the want of trying tho' !!

Do not know Mr Jardine but it is my finding that to aerialise 30yds + of standard fly line using standard single handed non modified rods is nigh on impossible. Somebody with good upper body strength & a Sage XP just might but the rest of us mere mortals, unlikely.I am not saying that it can not be done but in all my years I have never seen it & I have seen a few casters. Have met a few that say/said they could but on doing so have failed miserably quoting one reason or another.

Charles Jardine is one of the counties top professionals, writes articles in all the fly fishing magazines, he's a qualified instructor, I have personally seen him put out a full line using a bamboo stick, that was at one of the game fairs, He uses Sage rods normally!!
