Steve,

For £10 less, you could go for the "Introduction to River Fishing" from Paul Gaskell - a member of this forum. The DVD has had excellent reviews from forum members.

Kind regards

Default River academy - early season trout fishing

I've got both the river academy DVD's "Early season trout" and "small streams" and in my opinion they are both excellent, both are instructional and I really like the format of the two lads fishing together as a means of getting the message across. They are an entertaining watch as well as being instructional, whereas a few DVD's can be a bit dull. So I'd definitely recommend both DVD's. Even my wife enjoyed them!

Yes!

The mixed review will always occur when someone 'dares' to change a format.

You will get to see how things are done 'wrong' and how to do things 'right'. Ollies description is good but even if he did it wrong, it would be like listening to Les Dawson on the piano, you just know he's a master at it really.
With Deano you get to see the 'warts' and get a better comprehension of a style of fishing more akin to an 'angler' rather than a virtuoso. (I'm not saying your cr@p Deano).

I haven't seen Paul's video.

There is an earlier thread on this DVD. Four pages of nothing but praise for it..I believe the second one is even better.

Nothing wrong with OEs DVDs but the River Academy DVDs are about fishing with some fly tying and basic entymology. Enjoyable to watch many times over and learn a little more each time.

Hi All,

I've a friend who works at FFFT and he told me the DVD wasn't that favourably received because they had already seen it!

They reviewed a dvd called 'Three Flies and the River Don' over a year ago and that the 'daring' similarities were rather more than coincidental with the tackle and tying included etc

So with reference to a previous message:
If you want to save a tenner buy the Paul Gaskell DVD (which is very good) and if you want to save even more get the Three Flies DVD

FF & FT magazine gave the River Academy DVD a middling review, Total Flyfisher raved about it so don't take too much notice of the magazines!

I have seen both the River Academy DVDs and found them both very well made and instructional - as is the Paul Gaskell DVD and the Paul Sissons DVD - horses for courses really.

I DVD is always useful in that you can go back and watch different sections again and again but nowt beats a day with a guide such as John Tyzack.

Kind regards

That's a very bold claim, which raises the question of why didn't they say so in their review? Oh well, just goes to show you can't trust everything you read . . . .

I bought the first River Academy DVD and consider it money well spent - I learned a lot from it and the fly tying sequences were particularly good IMO (as a novice fly tyer). Yes, there were some fishing scenes where a close-up shot would have worked better, but it's not meant to be Trout Bum-style fish porn.

I should add I have no connection with the makers - haven't even seen 'Life on Mars' or 'Ashes to Ashes'.

I also have Paul Gs DVD which is also very good and the Ollie Edwards Spiders/upstream nymphing DVD which has to be one of the best stress-relievers I know of

Oh, welcome to the forum btw.
