Default Czech nymphing

Whilst fighting the downstream wind this morning and trying to keep tight to the team , it occurred that rather than using a fly rod and line,it would be (?) better presented and lighter on the arms to use a 10'-11' pole.I think they are called whips by the pole fishermen.Has anyone tried this before I waste more of the housekeeping?
Regards
Robh

Default Whip

US,
I was thinking the lack of reel ,rings and the elastic would make it very light and give more reach .Having seen the price (£7) ,I have decided to break the budget anyway! Thanks for your thoughts

Default Another new term to me.

" ... they are called whips ..." Would someone post a link to these? Like a 'bolt rig,' not something I've come across before.

Tnx in advance!
Fred

Default Good Grief!

You can spend more on a spool of tippet material than the cost of one of those rods. I can just see me now showing up with one of those on the Rogue River.

fred, the standard whip is designed for pulling out 2oz roach , bream, and perch.quite a good laugh actually, and a fish about 8oz is amazing.

Only time I can think of where I've seen this type of rod was in Italy. Tho they're actually a spinning rod config., lot of fellows use these for fishing in sheltered bays/harbours for small salt water fish.

Default theory v. practice

Bought the 4m whip at some £300 less than the fly rod.Chap in the shop fitted the elastic and clip suitable for 6lb line (we have escapee rainbows up to 5lb now in parts of the Dove) .7' of 10lb tied to my 7' made up 3 fly Czech set up and had an hour on the river last night.First impressions:
MUCH lighter than fly rod, line and reel
13' made flicking the team out and up easier
control seemed better
the few (admittedly only 10" or so) fish were easily controlled but a big lady with dorsal erect in fast water WILL be interesting!
Thank you for your thoughts and if any of you are in Area 5 of the Grayling Society , I will bring it on our fishing days for you to play with.
regards
Robh
p.s. it cost £8.60 including the elastic etc!

Hi Fred, a whip is a telescopic rod usually made from Carbon or similar compound, and is normally 5-7m. It has a line attached directly to the end of the whip, no reel, and unlike its' big brother the Pole, has generally speaking no elastic at the end, all the fight is done through the whip itself!!
Normally used for small Bleak and so on.
A bolt rig, is a carp rig generally favoured by the Chuck it and Chance it brigade, who spend a weekend asleep or boozing in their bivvies!!
It involves a fixed lead directly attached to the hook length, so as the fish takes the bait and moves away, the static lead sets the hook as the hook length tightens, this usually panics the fish into an almighty run, hence the term "bolt" as they bolt for freedom!! it allows people to be away from their rods and leave the spool of the reel in free spool, so they then knock the clutch over as they get to the rod and then fight the fish!
Hope this helps mate
Cheers
Bob

Instead of that why not just buy a 10ft 4 weight?
